French superdirector Ariane Mnouchkine tends to excite a certain level of, shall we say, fanatacism. And I speak as a rabid, nutty groupie myself. All those poor, sleepless theater lovers lining up in at dawn in the park to see Twelfth Night would be better served—if they are bound and determined to wait seven hours for a theater ticket—to queue for her Les Éphémères instead. Sure, Twelfth Night is utterly lovable, but a Mnouchkine show could change your life. So let’s say you’re new to Mnouchkine, or perhaps you missed one of the biggies along the way (like our own David Cote, who swears never to make that mistake again, did). Lincoln Center has taken pity on you and is throwing a daylong symposium and film fest of her greatest works this Thursday, July 9. I almost hate to tell you, because if you go, I’ll have to fight you for your seat. But be warned: I throw a mean elbow.
