Cheap Seat of the Day: Hair

Posted in Cheap Seat of the Day by David Cote on March 5th, 2009 at 10:38 am

hippyYou know who doesn’t have a lot of money to burn these days? Er, well, we don’t, and in all probability, neither do you. But you know who really doesn’t have much cash on hand? Dirty, naked hippies. Those riot-fomenting, drugged-up sex maniacs got no green at all; they’re naked, see, so they wouldn’t have anywhere to put their filthy pennies, even if they had ’em. But the producers of Hair have taken pity on the couture-averse, unhygienic rabblement. They’ve just announced $25 lottery tickets to sit in the box seats and do whatever unspeakable things hippies do at Broadway musicals. No doubt the producers want to quarantine them from the rest of the crowd. Read on for details. You dirty, dirty hippies.

HAIR ANNOUNCES DAILY LOTTERY DRAWING FOR “BE-IN BOX” TICKETS

$25 TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR EACH PERFORMANCE
    BEGINNING THIS FRIDAY

The producers of HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical have established a pre-performance ticket lottery for box-seat tickets, aptly renamed “BE-IN BOXES.” Those wishing to purchase these tickets are asked to show up at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre 2 1/2 hours before each performance for a drawing that will take place 2 hours before curtain. For every performance (beginning Friday), a limited number of lucky audience members will receive $25 “be-in box” tickets, promising to make their experience of the show both affordable and unique. Limit one entry per person, and two tickets per entry. Winners must be present at the time of the drawing and show valid ID to purchase tickets. Tickets can be purchased from the box office in cash only.

HAIR begins preview performances on Friday, March 6, with an opening night set for Tuesday, March 31, 2009.

After a smash-hit run at Central Park‘s Delacorte Theater last summer, HAIR returns to Broadway for the first time in over 30 years. The story of a group of young Americans searching for love and peace during the Vietnam era, HAIR is a timeless portrait of a movement that changed the world. Its groundbreaking rock score paved the way for some of the greatest musicals of our time. Now, the “Age of Aquarius” dawns again in this jubilant new production directed by Diane Paulus, with choreography by Karole Armitage. HAIR features a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado, and music by Galt MacDermot.

The complete cast includes Sasha Allen (Dionne, White Boys Trio), Ato Blankson-Wood (Tribe), Steel Burkhardt (Electric Blues Quartet, Tribe), Jackie Burns (Black Boys Trio, Tribe), Briana Carlson-Goodman (Swing), Allison Case (Crissy), Gavin Creel (Claude), Lauren Elder (Tribe), Allison Guinn (Tribe), Chasten Harmon (Swing), Anthony Hollock (Tribe), Jay Armstrong Johnson (u/s Claude), Kaitlin Kiyan (Black Boys Trio, Tribe), Andrew Kober (Margaret Mead, Dad, Tribe), Josh Lamon (Swing), Megan Lawrence (Mother), Caissie Levy (Sheila), Nicole Lewis (White Boys Trio, Tribe), Ryan Link (u/s Berger), John Moauro (Tribe), Darius Nichols (Hud), Brandon Pearson (Tribe), Paris Remillard (Tribe), Megan Reinking (Black Boys Trio, Tribe), Bryce Ryness (Woof), Michael James Scott (Swing), Saycon Sengbloh (Abraham Lincoln, White Boys Trio, Tribe), Maya Sharpe (Tribe), Kacie Sheik (Jeanie, Tribe), Theo Stockman (Hubert, Tribe), Will Swenson (Berger) and Tommar Wilson (Tribe).

The creative team also includes Scott Pask (scenic design), Michael McDonald (costume design), Kevin Adams (lighting design) and Acme Sound Partners (sound design).

HAIR is presented on Broadway by The Public Theatre (Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director; Andrew D. Hamingson, Executive Director) Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel, Gary Goddard Entertainment, Kathleen K. Johnson, Nederlander Presentations, Inc., Fran Kirmser Productions/Jed Bernstein, Marc Frankel, Broadway Across America, Barbara Manocherian/WenCarLar Productions, JK Productions/Terry Schnuck, Andy Sandberg, JAM Theatricals, The Weinstein_Company/Norton Herrick, Jujamcyn Theaters, Joey Parnes, Arielle Tepper Madover, Debbie Bisno/Rebecca Gold, Christopher Hart, Apples and Oranges, Tony & Ruthe Ponturo, Joseph Traina by special arrangement with Elizabeth Ireland McCann.

Tickets for HAIR (starting at $37.00) are available via Telecharge.com, by calling (212) 239-6200 or at the box office of the Hirschfeld Theatre (302 W 45th Street). The performance schedule is as follows: Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday – Friday at 8:00 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 & 8:00 p.m., Sunday at 2:00 & 7:30 p.m.

Hair is beyond amazing. It’s not a broadway show it’s a spiritual experience. I wish that everyone could fill their hearts with love and close their eyes and feel the warmth of love that this experience brings. Love to all…
