  • Your perfect Friday: Fashion, ice-skating and Sasha

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on November 6th, 2009 at 8:01 am

736otcx491evdaymain-01Sashaying in with inimitable style, it’s your perfect Friday. Of course, it’s stolen its look from the Museum at FIT’s exhibit “American Beauty: Aesthetics and Innovation in Fashion” and artist E.V. Day’s “exploding couture” at the New York City Opera.

Sharpen up your blades and head to The Pond at Bryant Park which opens for ice-skating today, or polish up your tankard for the start of the three-day Cask Ale Festival.

Night owls should check out TONY Approved comedy, Sasha at Blkmarket Membership or the experimental rock showcase The Chinese Underground Invasion.

Strike a pose! Your perfect Friday is watching.

Your perfect Friday: Fake blood, confused flowers and Yeasayer’s 3D light show

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on October 30th, 2009 at 9:11 am

    735otcx220ypwfri

Take good care of it, water it and let your perfect Friday blossom. Just like the flower who wants to be a person in the play A Lily’s Revenge. Also today, Yeasayer perform with a 3-D light show at It Came From Brooklyn and the Wingdale Community Singers bring old-time Americana to the Issue Project Room. Or buy a nifty old-school camera at the PowerShovel pop-up shop and go shoot the d’n’b heads dancing to U.K. DJ don LTJ Bukem.

Of course, you can get into the Halloween spirit and have your senses assaulted at the Haunted House of Yes, or your clothes ruined by the copious amounts of fake blood at Killgore: The Resurrection. All on your perfect Friday.

Your perfect Friday: The circus, a magic bus and Vincent Price!

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on October 23rd, 2009 at 8:01 am

734otcx491fridayFive, four, three, two, one: Your perfect Friday has lift off, and it’s not the only thing launching today. The Big Apple Circus returns with leaping dogs and Bello Nock the clown. Then there’s the party for new book Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records with music from Merge founders Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance. Go-go boys and $1 shots help transmen mag Original Plumbing get going and 3rd Ward has the grand opening of its second, extended space. Not launching, but embarking is Chris Gethard’s Magic Bus of Haunted Stories.

Houston we have a problem: Kevin is geeking out again, this time Kevin Geeks Out About… Vincent Price!

Your perfect Friday has the right stuff.

Your perfect Friday: Nerds, butt sex and Al Green

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on October 16th, 2009 at 12:01 am

    poster

It’s classy, it’s classic, it’s vintage: It’s your perfect Friday and the International Vintage Poster Fair, a chance to replace that Bob Marley poster with an advertisement for a ski vacation in Biarritz, France. Now you’ve got the highbrow pad, get some high culture at the New Yorker festival which runs through Sunday.

If you’re not a pseud, check out Big Apple Comic Con for some down-to-earth spandex-costume fun with William Shatner, or take a geeky look at swingers at Nerd Nite. If that makes your glasses steam up, probably best to miss Peg-Ass-Us: A Wholesome Show About Butt-Sex and the minister of love, Al Green.

It’s smart or it’s sensual (or both!). It’s your perfect Friday.

    Your perfect Friday

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on September 25th, 2009 at 12:01 am

730otcx491ypwmasterFlick your fringe out of your face to get a good look at your perfect Friday. Yep, that’s right, you are seeing Ryan Adams reading at the NYPL. Don’t look away just yet, or you might miss Kevin Geeks Out About…Werewolves, and Kevin geeking out about anything is always an amusing good time.

Enjoy a new breed of French chefs cooking side by side, some would say fraternally, with NYC’s top toques at Le Fooding d’Amour. Or discover the newest technology at the Gizmodo Gallery, or just discover their pancake machine churning out free pancakes.

Or follow BK to the Gugg with It Came from Brooklyn. You don’t want to miss a thing on your perfect Friday. Maybe it’s worth investing in a hair band.

Your perfect Friday: Secret Project Robot, a Nerdtacular and Othello

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on September 18th, 2009 at 12:01 am

    729otcx476ypwfriday2

Conspiracy theorists, this is not your perfect Friday. You always suspected the existence of Secret Project Robot, you just never imagined it would be the opening night of Williamsburg Fashion Weekend. Disappointing for you, great for the rest of us.

Nerds form like Voltron tonight at the Second Annual Nerd Nite Nerdtacular and rummagers head to Found Film Festival to snigger at ’80s VHS with David Cross, David Wain, Kumail Nanjiani and Bobby Tisdale. Or get a shot of theater tonight either at Heavenly Bento or at Peter Sellers’ Othello.

Your perfect Friday is out there. You just have to believe.

Your perfect Friday: Enlightenment, inebriation and rockabilly

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on September 4th, 2009 at 12:01 am

727otcx491ypwmainRepeat it like a mantra: my perfect Friday, my perfect Friday, my perfect Friday, and enlightenment will not elude you at the outdoor walking play in Central Park, The Buddha Prince.

Rather than enlightenment, you could work on inebriation and your Buddha beer belly at the Great World Beer Fest. With events like this, it’s indeed a great world.

Two weekend-long festivals kick off tonight, East Village stalwart Howl! and the Coney Island Rockabilly Festival. But for one night only Battles, Flying Lotus and !!! perform at Warp20, and original Paradise Garage spinners Joey Llanos and David DePino play at Paradise Under the Stars.

Armed with this ultimate knowledge, go out and enjoy your perfect Friday.

Your perfect Friday: MJ sing-along, a soul weekender and a bake sale

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on August 28th, 2009 at 12:01 am

otcypwcookiessiloWhat is that delicious smell? Is it your your perfect Friday? Or the cookies and a tall glass of music being served up at the Brooklyn Skillshare benefit fund-raiser. Prefer some South Asian flavor? Engendered: I View Film 2009 film fest gets spicy with an opening party of Bollywood big hitters discussing sexuality and cinema–and partying, of course. There’s also the taste of Asia at the Queens Museum of Art’s Passport Fridays: Taiwan.

Or commit to a themed weekend by attending the Michael Jackson Memorial Birthday Sing-Along in preparation for tomorrow’s birthday celebrations, or start a dancing weekender at the Brooklyn Soul Festival.

Either way, don’t blame it on the good times, blame it on your perfect Friday.

Your perfect Friday: The Swayze, the Antlers and the Basterds

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on August 21st, 2009 at 12:01 am
The Swayze makes every day perfect

The Swayze makes every day perfect.

Your perfect Friday can be succinctly summed up this week. Films, music and films about music. There’s a Dirty Dancing double bill at Monkey Town, Inglourious Basterds everywhere (the Phillies are in town, right guys?) and music documentary Rock Heart Beijing on a roof in Brooklyn.

Geko Jones spins at “Afro-Latin Style,” The Antlers perform, and there are pictures galore of your favorite bands at the opening of Punk Photo.

If you don’t like music or film, you’re probably the type of person who likes poetry and croquet. In which case it’s lucky Bryant in the Park caters to both your passions.

If none of that piques your interest, there’s no hope for you having a perfect Friday.

Your perfect Friday: Bowie versus Muppets, the Del Close Marathon and Brooklyn invades the Guggenheim

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on August 14th, 2009 at 12:01 am

ypfriIt’s a battle between good (Muppets) and evil (David Bowie) on your perfect Friday. Yes, it’s a free screening of Labyrinth at Cabaret Cinema. The eternal battle also rages, but with a bit more depth, in District 9, TONY’s film of the week, which opens today.

The Guggenheim welcomes bands, authors, comedians—a whole borough—into its rotunda for the first event in the It Came from Brooklyn series, and Hercules and Love Affair come from disco land to the Gramercy Theater.

There’s also the start of the Del Close Marathon, an improv endurance test (for the performers, not you), and spectacles galore on your perfect Friday.

Your perfect Friday: The Antifolk Festival, fancy dancing and Cobra Commander

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on August 7th, 2009 at 12:01 am

723otcx220ypwfridayHasn’t this picture just made it a perfect Friday already? Get another hit of this feeling at “COBRA-lalilulelo,” an exhibition that pays homage to animated evildoers.

If you’re more highbrow, there’s art without the pop culture at the “Young Curators, New Ideas II” exhibition at PPOW Gallery, or there’s Chautauqua!, a theatrical examination of the importance of high culture that employs fancy dancing, fisticuffs, ironic jokes and people strutting about in short pants swearing at each other.

To top off your day, BJ Snowden at the Antifolk Festival and the DJs at The Bunker provide the soundtrack to your perfect Friday.

Or, for a musical blowout of epic proportions, pony up for Jay-Z, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Vampire Weekend at All Points West. Kanye West may not be performing, but his album 808s & Heartbreak has inspired the dance performance WHY WON’T YOU LET ME BE GREAT!!!

Your perfect Friday: Jaws, capture the flag and two quirky parties

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on July 17th, 2009 at 12:01 am

jawssiloYes, your perfect Friday will involve a humongous man-eating shark named Bruce (it’s the shark called Martin that’s responsible for your worst Friday). But if there’s one place you’d want to watch Jaws on water, it’s on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier like the Intrepid.

There will be mayhem on Williamsburg’s streets as Newmindspace and Urban Madness invite you all to turn up and play capture the flag. Our guess is hundreds will.

Eccentricity will abound elsewhere in Brooklyn at One Peculiar Evening and its peculiar costume competition. Back in Manhattan at Nouvelle Époque Cabaret-Salon, professor of abnormal psychology Chester Mackerel will make you feel welcome at the 19th-century-themed party.

Find out more things to make today your perfect Friday.

Your perfect Friday: Lichen, Brooklyn Bowl and the Umbilical Brothers

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on July 10th, 2009 at 12:01 am
    "Lichen": Apolo Torres.

    "Lichen": Apolo Torres.

Who would have thought lichen, that lacelike, photosynthetic organism, would form part of your perfect Friday? São Paulo artists Loro Verz, Mundano and Apolo Torres, that’s who.

Potentially more exciting than lichen is Brooklyn Bowl’s opening party, High Roller, and probably more versatile are the physical comedians the Umbilical Brothers, with their new show, Speedmouse.

If you’re a jock, the last Nerd Nite of the summer will be less exciting than lichen, but Serena Williams playing a tennis match in Randalls Island will be more so.

All this and more awaits you on your perfect Friday.

Your perfect Friday: Wait for Obama, wait for Anne Hathaway, but don’t wait to shed your clothes

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on July 3rd, 2009 at 12:01 am
    ypfri

Do this on your perfect Friday.

Have you got a Friday free from work? Then you can squeeze even more into your perfect July 4 weekend.

Spend a day in Brooklyn catching Blabac Photo: The Art of Skateboarding Photography and playing a few rounds at The Putting Lot mini-golf course. Finish up with a free dog at Beats and BBQ in Williamsburg.

If you’re sticking to Manhattan, maybe it’s time to join the queue for tickets at 1pm for Twelfth Night. Three words should get you there on time: Anne. Hathaway. Drag. You could also score tickets to Sonic Youth, or admire how cute Johnny Depp looks with a gun in Public Enemies.

Over at UCB, a gaggle of ex-presidents will be Waiting for Obama (we know we were for eight long years) and doing some improv. Over at Fire Island, people will be shedding their clothes, and probably doing improv too.

Get all of the details here.

Your perfect Friday: Child’s play or steamy adult fun

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on June 19th, 2009 at 12:01 am
Steamy adult fun in Banya Russian Baths.

Steamy adult fun in Banya Russian Baths

Naughty or nice? That’s the essential question facing you this Friday. You want nice? Then enjoy a Pac-Man contest and sock-puppetry at HiChristina. Or lose yourself in the fable of a dreamer who wants to fly in Bird Machine.

Now if you want naughty, there’s a dance party in Banya Russian Baths and a re-creation of the sleazefest that was Coney Island in the ’30s at Monkey Town.

Of course you might just want to watch a film. Whichever way you’re leaning, we’ve got the details you need in your perfect Friday.
