    Roommate of the week: Kaelyn

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on July 9th, 2009 at 10:41 am

kaelyn-blueJoin her in her 2 BR, 1 BA apartment in Washington Heights on August 1. Monthly rent: $800 (furniture available for purchase if needed)

About Kaelyn: “I’m a dancer, originally from outside Washington D.C., and moved here for college five years ago. Most of my time is occupied by dancing and waitressing to pay the bills, but when I have a free moment I love cooking, photography, playing piano and exploring the city. I know how to have a good time, but prefer to keep my home more of an escape from the craziness of the city. My ideal nights at home include cooking dinner and watching a good movie, or sometimes catching up on my roommate’s week over a pint of Ben and Jerry’s (Half-Baked is my fave!). I’m an old-movie buff and have an awesome DVD collection that I’m willing to share.”

About you: “My main requirement is that you be honest and low drama. I have no preference for a guy or a girl. It would be fantastic if we became good friends, but at the same time, if you just want your space, I’m cool with that too. I’m also looking for someone who likes cats; I’ve got one now named Antigone (don’t ask), and she’s adorable, I swear!”

About the space: “The apartment is a fifth-floor walk-up but totally worth the trek. It was renovated last summer, so it’s in great condition and it gets plenty of sunlight, which is a rarity in many Manhattan spaces. There are hardwood floors in both bedrooms, the living room and the hallway; a new laundry room was just added to the building and it is pretty awesome. It’s right by the 1, 2, 3 and A, C, E subway stations and just a short walk to the Hudson River. Riverside Park is nearby too, so there’s tons of pretty scenery and picnic opportunities, provided it stops raining soon. My roommate is leaving at the end of July, so I’ll need someone from August to May (when the lease is up). You’ll have the option to renew the lease then if you want!

    Why I love East Harlem

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on July 7th, 2009 at 11:50 am

picture-6“My neighborhood isn’t really a destination, and that’s the way I like it,” says Time Out Kids‘ Web editor Raven Snook. Although she grew up across town on the Upper West Side, she moved to East Harlem almost a decade ago. “I came for the low cost of living, but I’ve stayed because it’s laid-back, friendly and convenient. Plus, no drunken college kids!”

Check out her favorite spots after the jump.

    Rommate of the week: Heidee

Posted in Apartments by Lisa Freedman on July 2nd, 2009 at 10:35 am

4509_90888673818_783738818_1819098_2863274_nJoin her in her 2 BR, 3 BA 1,800-square-foot duplex in West Harlem on September 1. Monthly rent: $1,750 (though Heidee is currently attempting to negotiate a lower price with her landlord.)

About Heidee: “I am a 34-year-old emergency room nurse who works 12-hour shifts three or four nights a week, and I work every other weekend. When I get home from work, I like to read,  watch a little TV or just crash. Working in the ER can be pretty grueling. I have an active social life when my schedule allows; and on my long weekends off, I like to get away, especially during the summer.”

About you: “I’m responsible, neat, considerate, and respectful of others’ space and privacy. I expect the same from my roommate.”

About the space: “It’s in a beautiful brownstone building and has exposed brick  and really high ceilings throughout. The first floor has a big living room with a working fireplace, a full bathroom, an enormous kitchen with an open layout, new kitchen appliances (dishwasher/microwave) and a separate dining area with two french doors opening to a balcony. The second floor has the bedrooms, each on opposite sides of the loft-style layout. The room to be rented has its own full bathroom, a working fireplace and a skylight. (Actually, both bedrooms have their own bathrooms and skylights.) There is access to the rooftop and another balcony on the second floor. The apartment has a washer and dryer in the unit.”

About the area: “The apartment is next to St. Nicholas Park in a very quiet and safe neighborhood. I’ve been living here for one and a half years and come home at different hours of the night and have always felt safe. There is street parking and is very easy to find a spot daily. It’s close to the B, C, 1, 2, and 3. The A and D express trains can be taken one stop away. There is a Starbucks, a few Duane Reades, a Pathmark and two New York Sports Clubs within a few blocks from the apartment. The river bike path is easily accessible, and the Riverbank State Park is nearby, which has a soccer field, tennis courts, basketball courts, Olympic-size pool and more.”

    Roommate of the week: Alexis

Posted in Books, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on June 25th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

picture-15Join her in her 3 BR. 1.5 BA apartment in West Harlem on August 1. Monthly rent: $900 (includes furniture, available for less if no furniture is needed.)

About Alexis: “I’m an early 20-something journalist originally from the L.A. area, and I work for a financial magazine in Midtown. I’m not a neat freak by any means, but I like to keep a tidy place as best I can. I enjoy going out once or twice a week. I’m not a crazy partier but, I’m not a dry, boring roommate either! I’ve got an awesome 28 year-old British roommate (also a writer), and we both enjoy some friendly intellectual conversation, thrown in with man-loving/hating rants every once in a while!”

About you: “I’d love a female roommate that shares the same qualities: gainfully employed, relatively clean, prompt when it comes to paying bills, not too loud (but not a mouse either), and open to roommate dinners. You should be looking to be friends with us, not just rent a room for a while.”

About the space: “It’s an awesome pre-war place just off the Hudson River. There is an awesome view of the river and New Jersey, which makes living here worth much more than you’re paying for. The apartment is close to everything you’ll ever need: a grocery store across the street, gym on top of that, major bank ATMs one block up and a RiteAid one block down. And let’s not forget the 24-hour McDonald’s! The place is already furnished, so all that’s needed is a new warm body and some suitcases to make the space complete.

    Roommate of the week: Allison

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on June 11th, 2009 at 12:37 pm

    picture-11
Join her in her 2BR apartment on the Upper East Side on August 1. Monthly rent: $1,000 + utilities (approx $100/month)

About Allison: “I’m 25 and a low-maintenance roommate. I keep a tidy apartment, but I’m not a clean freak. Everyone is busy and apartments get dirty, but it’s nice to come back to an apartment that is somewhat clean and manageable. My schedule isn’t the standard nine to five; I try to leave the apartment every day around 10. I love to sleep in and usually don’t surface till noon on the weekends. I come home late a couple nights a week and enjoy going to restaurants and bars frequently. I promise I always go out and never bring the party back to my apartment! I like to have friends over occasionally to drink before going out, but never anything crazy. Depending on your schedule, you may go days without seeing me!”

About you: “I’m looking for a female roommate, preferably between the ages of 24 and 30. You should be conscious of our common areas, and try and keep them clutter-free and clean! I’m not in search of my new BFF, but someone to go grab dinner with or talk to here and there would be great! I am looking for someone who is courteous and respectful of our common areas. No pets, no smoking and no dramatic phone calls yelling at your boyfriend every night, please.”

About the space: “My current roommate just got a job offer and is leaving town (we’re on great terms!). It is a fifth-floor walk-up at 78th St and Second Ave. You would get the bigger bedroom, which is big enough for a double bed. This is for a new lease and you should be willing to sign on for a year.”

Roommates of the week: Christy and Erika

Posted in Apartments by Lisa Freedman on June 4th, 2009 at 10:18 am

1Join these two ladies in their 3BR, 1BA apartment in Alphabet City on July 1. Monthly rent: $1,200 plus utilities (approx. $75/month)

About Christy and Erika: “We’re two 25-year-old professionals in the media industry.  Christy works in the online editorial department at timeoutkids.com, and Erika works in marketing. We love to go out and have very busy social lives, but can equally appreciate a night in with a bottle of wine and a DVR full of reality shows.”

About you: “We’re looking for someone, guy or girl, in their twenties who is considerate and clean, and isn’t a homebody; he or she should have as active a social life as we do. We don’t all need to be best friends, but it would be nice to share our apartment with someone we enjoy hanging out with, at least on occasion. Absolutely no pets or live-in boyfriends-girlfriends!”

About the space: “The common area and the room for rent are both fairly large with plenty of natural light. The building was renovated in 2003, so all the appliances are state-of-the-art. If having a dishwasher, elevator and in-building laundry don’t sell you, our roof deck will.”

    Roommate of the Week: Stefanie

Posted in Apartments by Lisa Freedman on May 28th, 2009 at 11:24 am

time-out-photo1Join her and three other ladies in their 4BR, 2BA duplex in Williamsburg on June 1. Monthly rent: $900 + utilities (approx $100/month)

About Stefanie: “I’m a 26-year-old female. I work in music public relations for indie bands and am in grad school part-time in NYU’s food studies program. I enjoy going to shows, new restaurants and bars. I’m not home a ton, but when I am, I’m either doing schoolwork or just hanging out watching bad TV. I’m laid-back, not looking for a best friend, but totally up for having BBQs on the deck or going for dinner together.”

About you: “We would love to share the space with another female between 25 and 35 years old, preferably with a nine-to-five schedule. No pets. We’re looking for someone who is clean with common sense and courtesy, can contribute in the common areas and whom we can get along with. We are very easygoing and respectful girls, and are just looking for the same. Looking for someone long-term; at least six months would be great!”

About the space: “You’d be sharing the upper level, which has its own living room and bathroom, with me. The apartment is in a brownstone and is older, but has a lot of great character. It’s located on a very safe street with parking and is only one stop from the city on the J, M, Z and L trains.”

    Roommate of the Week: Jordana

Posted in Apartments by Lisa Freedman on May 7th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

unknownJoin her in her 4BR, 2BA row house with W/D in Park Slope on June 1. Monthly rent: $1,000

About Jordana: “I’ve lived in this fabulous row house for four years with two great friends—one is leaving Brooklyn, the other is moving in with her boyfriend. I’m really busy during the week and spend most weekends with my man, but I do like the time that I spend at home to be friendly and stress-free.”

About you: “I’m on the hunt for two new roommates. I’m open to two independent folks or a pair on the prowl (no couples please). I would love to have more creative (and responsible) sorts in my midst. It’s always been a home to me—there’s a real sense of community here, shared with our neighbors and the fantastic guys who live in the garden apartment downstairs. I’d love roommates who can get behind the friendly atmosphere.”

About the space: “I live on a great block between Sixth and Seventh avenues in Park Slope. My house is a duplex row house with beautiful, charming details. The ground floor has two fireplaces, a huge living space, a full bathroom and an enormous kitchen with a new washer and dryer. Upstairs, there are four bedrooms and a full bathroom with a lovely stained-glass skylight. Two bedrooms are of equal size (one of them is mine) and two bedrooms are smaller (but each large enough to fit a queen bed and some furniture). One person would be occupying these two rooms—my current roommate uses one as her bedroom and one as a gigantic closet, but it’s ideal as an office or guest room. Like a mainline magnate demurely avoiding the subject of their personal wealth, I won’t gloat about the closet space—but it’s sizable, people.”

About the subways: Six short blocks to the F at Seventh Ave; two avenues to the F at 15th St–Prospect Park; N, R at Fourth Ave–9th St also nearby
