    Nooka pop-up shop at Den

Posted in Shopping by Rachel LeWinter on July 10th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

Say “New Yorker” with a heavy New York accent—what does it sound like? That’s how Matthew Waldman came up with the name for his funky, futuristic line of digital watches. Today Nooka opens up shop inside the East Village concept boutique Den.  The brand is introducing its newest line of lifestyle accessories, which will be launched for the fall season, along with the full line of timepieces. The new additions include a line of unique candy-colored belts ($95), and an eye-catching eau de parfum ($80) in a custom gem bottle. We’re particularly enamored with the Asset Organizer (a fancy name for wallet), which is made from a rubberlike substance, is soft and squishy (so it’s comfortable to sit on, men!), comes in Nooka’s signature bright colors and is even water-resistant.

Take a tour of the space and see what’s in store.

    Den, 330 E 11th St between First and Second Aves (212-475-0079). Mon–Sat noon–9pm; Sun noon–8pm. Through Aug 16.

Some sample sales have a strict no-try-on policy, which makes ensuring a perfect fit very difficult. But at this high-end blowout, you’re free to undress and re-dress at will with these designer threads. Slip into silk organza dresses, chopped from $5,185 to $1,950; embroidered jeans, cut from $1,105 to $380; or chiffon blouses for $520 (instead of $1,570). The Altman Building, 135 W 18th St between Sixth and Seventh Aves (robertocavalli.com). Subway: 1 to 18th St. Thu 25 11am–8pm.

Computer messenger bags are snipped from $100 to $60, weekender duffels are $85 (usually $142), and canvas totes with cross-body straps are $30 (were $65). 499 Seventh Ave at 37th St (212-380-2225). New pop-up shop alert: Japan Brand

Posted in Shopping by Rachel LeWinter on May 15th, 2009 at 5:58 pm

We’re lucky we live in a city where we have access to almost everything, with hands-down the best shopping anywhere (have you checked out these amazing indie shops yet?)–but, we admit, when it comes to worldly wares, the selection isn’t quite as extensive. Felissimo Design House recognized this and is bringing you a two-week-only pop-up shop. The Japan Brand (japanbrand.net) temporary boutique will showcase products from more than 21 distinctive regions, which have never been available to purchase in the U.S.—until now. You’ll find everything, including home accessories, stationery, textiles, clothing and more—starting as low as $7.50 for Awaji incense, to $18,000 for a portable tearoom. Check out our exclusive preview of what’s in store.

    Felissimo Design House, 10 W 56th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves (212-956-4438, felissimo.com). Mon 18–May 30. Mon–Sat 11am–6pm.

Sneak Peek: Smith + Butler pop-up shop at Sol Moscot

Posted in Shopping by Erin Wylie on March 26th, 2009 at 7:21 pm

    Photographs by Virginia Rollison

We were the first to tell you about the cool Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, shop Smith + Butler. Well, now we have a sneak preview of the Smith + Butler pop-up shop, in the historic Sol Moscot Lower East Side store (118 Orchard St at Delancey St, 212-477-3796).

Moscot Eyewear has been a New York institution since 1915, but Hyman Moscot started selling eyeglasses from a pushcart on the LES in 1899. The company is now run by fourth-generation Moscots, and the store pays homage to this heritage via black-and-white photos of the Moscot family through the ages. Marylynn Piotrowski, co-owner of Smith + Butler, says she also loves this sense of tradition, and that they’ve chosen to complement the selection of retro-chic Moscot eyewear by filling the pop-up with well-made, heritage brands like Filson, Pointer, Corcoran and Barbour. The Smith + Butler goods are available at Moscot LES starting tomorrow and will remain until May 25.
