Wanna live here for cheap? Sure ya do. Well, you can! Today through August 14, you can enter for a chance to win a discounted one-year lease. Thanks to discount supergod Daffy’s.
About the space: The lucky winner will pay just $700 for the 1,400-square-foot furnished space, normally on the market for $7,000 a month. Yes, furnished. It even comes with dishes and glassware to make your move hassle-free. Plus, the winner gets some Daffy’s bucks to spend at the stores or the pop-up shop on the ground level of this incredible building (at Seventh Ave South and Carmine St).
How to enter: Stop by any Daffy’s store (just not the pop-up shop) and look for a video submission booth. A manager will set you up to record a 30-second spot explaining why you should win. Read more about it here.
A few weeks ago, recent FIT graduate Katie Sokoler showed us how to do an easy DIY project that makes paper silhouettes come to life. She also agreed to let us give away an eight-by-ten print of the image you see to the left (part of her college thesis). We’re pleased to announce the winner (though we wish it had been us!): Dakota Lupo of Manhattan. Congrats, Dakota. Hope it keeps you young at heart!
As for the rest of you who weren’t lucky enough this time, you can still win other great prizes. We’re giving away three-day passes to All Points West a membership to the American Folk Art Museum, front-row tickets to Andy Dick’s show at Carolines, a Pinkberry party and more! Click here for more information.
What it is: An eight-week introductory-level improv or sketch comedy class at the Upright Citizens Brigade Training Center.
Why it’s awesome: Want to follow in the footsteps of UCB founders Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts and Matt Besser? Taking a class at the theater’s Training Center, where you’ll learn long-form improv or how to write short, comedic scenes, is certainly a good start. So long as you’re committed to comedy: Skipping class and tardiness are no laughing matter, as both are grounds for getting kicked out (no, seriously!). Upcoming classes include Improv 101 (Tuesdays 2:30–5:30pm, starting July 14) with Ari Voukydis, who’s appeared on VH1’s Best Week Ever and Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
What it is: A one-year membership to the Anthology Film Archives, which includes free access to all of the Anthology’s “Essential Cinema” films and gets you a discounted $6 rate for all other Anthology programs. Members can also reserve up to two tickets in advance and are invited to attend exclusive screenings.
Why it’s awesome: Equal parts museum, preservation society and indie film house, Anthology screens more than 900 avant-garde movies per year—in other words, damn near enough to make your eyes fall out. At the heart of its massive collection is the 330-title-strong “Essential Cinema,” consisting of flicks dating from the dawn of cinema through the mid-’70s, when the AFA first opened. The best part? You can catch all of those for f-r-e-e.
What it is: A VIP party for ten people at Water Taxi Beach’s newest location, at South Street Seaport, valid anytime in June, July or August (excluding holiday weekends)
Why it’s awesome: Grab nine of your closest pals and head to the brand-new South Street Seaport locale of Water Taxi Beach, where you’ll break it in with reserved tables for two hours (arrive by 7pm), at which you can enjoy complimentary fish tacos, hot dogs, chips, pitchers of sangria, beer, soft drinks, dessert—and killer views. Provided diversions include a round of minigolf for everyone, an hour reserved at the Ping-Pong table and a 30-minute thrill ride on the Shark, Circle Line Downtown’s speedboat that jets out of Pier 16. Make sure to snap a pic with Sharkie, the boat’s mascot, beforehand.
What it is: A one-year general membership to the Museum of Arts and Design, which includes unlimited free admission and privileged access to the museum, a 10 percent discount on purchases in the MAD store, special members-only exhibition previews, and discounts on selected performances and educational and public programs.
Why it’s awesome: Design aficionados will go mad for MAD, which houses four floors of exhibition galleries in its newly redesigned Columbus Circle digs. Peruse Gord Peteran’s furniture-as-art, through August 16, and glass works by Klaus Moje, including a large-scale mural specifically created for his current exhibition here, on view through September 20. Then head to the sixth floor to watch artists craft and sculpt in the open studio before applying that members-only discount to quirky items (hand-shaped salad tongs!) at the museum shop—consider it design within reach.
What it is: A pair of tickets to the Fiery Furnaces show at (Le) Poisson Rouge on June 11
Why it’s awesome: The Brooklyn siblings are touring in advance of their new album, I’m Going Away, which they wrote together. They’re famously unpredictable live—maybe they’ll treat you to a preview of their wry, gangly new songs during this intimate show. (Or maybe they’ll preview their new “nonrecord record,” reportedly out by year’s end.)
What it is: A six-week “Writing for SNL” class at the Peoples Improv Theater, taught Sunday evenings from 6 to 9pm beginning on June 7.
Why it’s awesome: If you’ve ever fantasized about conceptualizing Justin Timberlake’s next cameo appearance on SNL, this course will teach you how to flesh out your ideas into commercial parodies, one-page sketches and scenes for two actors. And who better to show you what an SNL sketch should look like than instructor and PIT founder Ali Farahnakian, who wrote for the show during its 25th-anniversary season? Oh, and did we mention the class is sold out? Even if you can’t make it June 7, you should still enter: Although the PIT is holding a spot in this upcoming session for one lucky TONY reader, the winner can defer enrollment until the next session, dates TBA.
And by poor people, we mean you. Okay, and us. Except this doesn’t apply to us because we’re not allowed to enter. Stupid journalist ethics. Anyway, in the spirit of this week’s magnificent Free issue, we’re giving away VIP tickets, exclusive memberships, and awesome prizes from some of our favorite venues and vendors.
What it is: A pair of prime seats to the Sunday, June 7, finale of Sleepwalk with Me, comic Mike Birbiglia’s Off Broadway one-man show about his severe sleeping disorder. In addition to an enviable perch, you’ll get an autographed poster of Birbiglia and Rubyy energy drink service at your seat.
Why it’s awesome: It’s your last chance to catch the incredibly funny theatrical debut of Birbiglia, who’s one of TONY’s favorite stand-ups. His self-deprecation and impeccable timing make this one you won’t want to miss.
For just $19.97 a year, you'll get hundreds of listings and free events each week, plus our special issues and guides, including Cheap Eats, Great Spas, Fall Preview, Holiday Gift Guide and more!
