If you’re still kicking yourself for letting a little wet weather keep you from trekking to Coney Island for this past weekend’s Mermaid Parade, take heart: The Gemini & Scorpio ladies have found a way for you to reenact your Splash fantasies well before next summer’s beach party. On June 27, don fins, aqua makeup and seashell pasties—or, if you prefer, a hobo costume—for Hobos & Mermaids on the High Seas, a dance and costume party aboard the Clipper City ship (Pier 17, South Street Seaport; boat boards 9pm, sails 10pm–midnight; advance $20, at the dock $25). DJ Jon Margulies, the originator of hobo-tech, will have you hobo-pokeying to railroad-song mash-ups all night long. The mer-people, however, may prefer the swim. Visit geminiandscorpio.com for more information and to purchase tickets.

Your perfect Saturday: Mermaids in Coney Island or pageantry elsewhere

Posted in Own This City by Jonathan Shannon on June 20th, 2009 at 12:01 am
Mermaids: not so alluring when you see their scaly bottom halfs.

Mermaids: not so alluring when you see their scaly bottom halves.

It’s that time of year again: The glittering Coney Island Mermaid Parade swims ashore. Make a day of it with the “Mermaids of the Deep” show and the roller-skating Mermaid Ball.

If you’re of the opinion that mermaids are horrendous mutants, an affront to God and man, get your fill of pageantry at the Pride Week opening rally or Bicycle Film Festival’s street fair.

Whichever one you choose, round off your perfect Saturday at Lagos Disco Inferno. Voodoo Funk’s Franc O is back from another shopping trip to Nigeria and he’s got a record bag full of gems for you to groove to.

All the details to these events and more are in your perfect Saturday.
