  • Looking to hire a nanny?

Posted in Own This City by Rachel LeWinter on July 7th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

    719hrsehirethisrebeccalayton_jruben18Rebecca Layton
More than ten years of experience

What she’s looking for: “I’m about to lose my job of two years. I have experience as a nanny with children as young as eight months old up to teenagers, and teaching experience with kindergarten through fourth grade. I studied dance for 13 years, am well educated, honest and have unbelievable references! My additional skills include: housekeeping, caring for pets, personal assistant proficiency (organizing, shopping, appointment setting), as well as working in a gallery setting (writing press releases, installing work, organizing, etc.). I’m looking for part-time, occasional, temporary work…anything! The best families I’ve worked for have had subscriptions to Time Out and those are the fun kind of people I’d love to work with.”

Got work? E-mail her at ralayton@gmail.com.

    Looking to hire a journalist?

Posted in Own This City by Rachel LeWinter on June 16th, 2009 at 2:13 pm

    716hrsehireYardena Schwartz
More than three years of professional experience.

What she’s looking for: “I’m a journalist with experience in print, Web, TV and radio. Until March, I was working for ABC News as a production associate on the Primetime series “What Would You Do?” In January 2008, I assisted The New York Times with its coverage of the New Hampshire presidential primary, serving as a fact-checker, reporter and researcher. While in New Hampshire, I contributed reporting to two front-page articles in The Times and cowrote a Web article. The only job I’ve landed recently is an unpaid writing gig. So, like many journalists, I’ve succumbed to blogging and tweeting. I’d like to work in news—my dream is to be a foreign correspondent—but I’m open to any job that fits my qualifications.”

Got work? E-mail her at y@yardenaschwartz.com.

    Looking to hire a bartender?

Posted in Own This City by Lisa Freedman on May 26th, 2009 at 3:53 pm

    picture-3Laura Ramadei
More than three years of experience.

What she’s looking for: “I have worked for several years in catering and recently obtained my TIPS certification to become a real bartender. In addition to serving and bartending, I have held supplementary jobs as a tutor, temp, digital marketer, teacher, file manager (i.e., alphabet-knower) and starving artist. Though many of my (male) friends have advised me to hike up my boobage to get a decent job that way, I thought I would turn to TONY first. I can make upwards of 20 drinks in four minutes; I have a nonsense-free, personable demeanor; and I have no issue with vomit—I am a bar manager’s dream employee. Also, I was serendipitously
born on the anniversary of Prohibition’s repeal—December 5.”

Got work? E-mail her at lauraramadei@gmail.com.

    professional experience

    Jennie Rossello-Clark
More than twelve years of professional experience

Their story: “My wife and I were both laid off last year—she was seven-and-a-half months pregnant. She was the director of music and talent at MTV (for 12 years), and I was the manager of design and administration at the Skin Cancer Foundation. We’re desperately looking for work. Hopefully someone can hire us, but if not, our son, Truman, will poop for food!”

What he’s looking for: “I’m looking for a Web/graphic-design/art-direction/online-marketing job. Well, any job really. I have degrees in art and English.”
Got work? E-mail him at furyk@jfuryk.com.

What she’s looking for: “I do programming strategy and creative content for television and online, as well as music-talent booking for all of the above—basically, one-stop shopping in entertainment!”

Looking to hire a production assistant?

Posted in Own This City by Rachel LeWinter on May 4th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

    710webseekhirethisChad Zdroik
    Three years of professional experience

What he’s looking for: “Until the recent layoffs, I was proudly working on Sesame Street (yes, I have Muppet experience). I edited website video productions, designed promotional materials, worked on animations for mobile content, wrote and edited articles, and even lent my voice, playing a five-year-old boy for an outreach project. Ideally, I’d like to continue working in children’s media (a major plus if it’s educational content), though any position that could offer me the chance to grow in a related field would be most welcome. I have made my own feature-length films, drawn comic strips, written and illustrated my own children’s books, created puppets, voiced characters and acted. And my friends used to call me ‘Muppet’ long before I worked at the Street.”

Got work? E-mail him at cgzdroik@yahoo.com.

If you like role-playing and entertaining children (at the same time even!), the Cyclones want to hear from you! Brooklyn’s one and only professional baseball team is searching for the perfect person to fill the sizable shoes of the borough’s favorite mascots—Sandy the Seagull and Pee Wee.

Applicants must be highly energetic, in good physical condition and reliable. Candidates must be able to perform at all 38 home games and additional private functions during the 2009 season, create new skits for the characters and more. Some experience is preferred but not required.

Anyone interested in applying for this position should e-mail the Cyclones’ community relations manager Elizabeth Lombardi at liz@brooklyncyclones.com or call 718-37-BKLYN.

Looking to hire a music editor?

    703seekhiremelaurenLauren Harris
    Six years of professional experience

What she’s looking for: “This past December I was laid off from VH1.com, where I was in charge of all things music and entertainment, its special-events tent-pole programs (Rock Honors, Hip Hop Honors) and its blogs. Having worked in marketing, I’m familiar with writing copy for varying campaigns. Given my background in both print and online media, I feel equally qualified and comfortable in both arenas. In my freelance career, I write about numerous topics, making me a generalist who turns out clear, engaging copy by deadlines. Looking to hire a Chinese language obsessive?

“Wah! I want to find some work. I can speak Mandarin!”

    Caroline Cooper
More than ten years of professional experience

What she’s looking for: “I’ve lived outside the U.S.—in China and Indonesia—for the past seven years and moved to New York fairly recently. In Asia I worked as a journalist and later as a speechwriter for the U.N. Hard, pavement-pounding, finger-wagging work! Now just leaving my neighborhood feels like a big deal. I live in Chinatown, and my dream job is to just walk around and talk to people, ask after their dogs and health, do everything in Chinese. If anyone needs me to chew the fat for them in Mandarin (I’m fluent) or in Bahasa Indonesia (this one’s a little more touch and go), I’m game.”

What she’s looking for: “In October, I lost my job at a top American art gallery due to lack of work. Because of the small size of the gallery, I was involved with both maintaining the office and selling the art. I would excel in my next position because of the knowledge I have gained, my related education and my ability to successfully deal with clients and employees. Additionally, this role will help prepare me to eventually own and operate my own gallery. I work well on a team and am proud to acknowledge that I played a key role in taking NYU’s volleyball team to the NCAA Championship games all four years of college.”

What she’s looking for: “I need some students. Most of my private students have been with me for two and a half years, but finding new ones is tough: Craigslist just gets me perverts or people who want to take advantage of a free first lesson. I have a nontraditional attitude toward teaching, while still incorporating the necessary fundamentals of music, such as theory, note reading and technique. Also, for what it’s worth, my husband is a rad guitar teacher.”

What she’s looking for: “My past jobs have mostly concentrated on high-end residential, with light commercial work. Now, I’d really love to expand into the hospitality realm of design.
