French Sole, originator of the “ballerina flat,” first opened its tiny shoe shop in 1989 on the Upper East Side. For 20 years, it’s continued to stock more than 5,000 pairs of shoes, library-style, with sales staff climbing up and down ladders to retrieve footwear. Now you can snag some of its fashionable flats at up to 80 percent off. Low-cut metallic designs are slashed from $110 to $69, round-toe leather styles are $129 (were $165), and quilted flats are trimmed from $225 to $139. 976 Lexington Ave at 71st St (212-472-9200). In addition to serious fashion skills, it seems Built by Wendy designer Wendy Mullin has a bit of a sixth sense when it comes to the weather. How else would she have known to create an online-only sample sale that starts today? Instead of trudging out into this sludgy, icky mess to scoop up Mullin’s quirky printed shirts, flattering dresses and cool denim, girls and guys can browse past season samples (starting at $10) online. And because we don’t know how long this snow will take to melt, the sale continues online through Wednesday. Start shopping!
If Wendy’s show is any indication, tights and babydoll dresses are here to stay.
While we loved the grunge-inspired collection, I was more preoccupied with these two ladies than with the clothes.
It was really refreshing to see a show attendee reading The New York Times while waiting for the show to begin instead of pretending to read important/funny/social e-mails on her iPhone. See, print’s not dead.
Did someone put Crisco on the catwalk? This show inspired what could be a million-dollar idea: sandpaper runways. (Has anyone patented this? I think it’s worth looking into.) The models could not stop slipping, and I couldn’t figure out if it was the shoes or the floor that was doing them wrong. Bottom line: Sandpaper would help.—Corinne Mohr
