  • How people have sex in really small NYC apartments

Posted in Apartments, Sex and the City by Raven Snook on October 26th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

49ftx150smallaptNow that we’ve got your attention, let us be the first to admit that our title is slightly misleading. If you’re looking for a slide show of contortionist sexual positions, we’re sorry to disappoint you. However, if you’d like a candid peek at the sex lives of parents who live in studios and one-bedrooms, you’ll definitely want to click here to see our sister pub Time Out Kids‘ article. Hot pull quote: “We’d spend a lot of time in the living room and the kitchen, which had this nice marble counter. But it was so friggin’ cold! It wasn’t sexy like in the movies.” If you’re even considering spawning in the city, this is something you’ll want to know.

    Why I love Ditmas Park

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on September 1st, 2009 at 10:07 am

    picture-13
“I love my neighborhood because it’s a secret,” says Samantha Terry, TONY’s marketing manager. “Who would ever guess that just west of the dirty, noisy and crowded Flatbush Avenue lies the charming enclave of Victorian homes?”

Unfortunately, TONY’s been letting the cat out of the bag: Two spots on the main strip, Cortelyou Road, have been named Eat Out Awards Critics’ Picks (The Farm and Sycamore). Award-winning restaurants aside, there’s even more to love about this ‘hood. The superspeedy Q train brings Terry’s commute from the Cortelyou Road stop into lower Manhattan to only 30 minutes. And at just a short distance from Prospect Park, the neighborhood is perfect for leisurely afternoon strolls. There’s also the Ditmas Park Concert Series, featuring neighborhood musicians each spring, and Terry’s looking forward to the September 13 Flatbush Frolic, which takes place annually on Cortelyou Road.

More of her favorites are after the jump. Read more »

    Why I love Chinatown

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on August 25th, 2009 at 2:58 pm

picture-11Working his way as a nomad through Washington Heights to the Financial District, Chris Schonberger, TONY’s assistant Web editor, has finally found a home in Chinatown. “The abundance of legitimately cheap and delicious food is a big selling point for me (as well as a rare commodity in Manhattan), and the fact that I am much taller than the majority of the people there seals the deal,” he jokes.

    Roommate of the week: Zamari

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on August 13th, 2009 at 11:53 am

n684225650_5641794_4866Join her in her 2BR, 1.5BA furnished loft apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on September 1. Monthly rent: $1,350 plus utilities.

About her: “I’m a 28-year-old lass from London. I work in the fashion industry and travel a bit, so you’ll get the place to yourself sometimes. I smoke but don’t like the place to smell, so I do it outside or air out the apartment. I’m not anal, though leaving dishes in the sink for two days is pushing it. I like to deejay at bars in the East Village for fun every now and then. Also, I am gay-friendly. I listen more than I watch, but the TV and cable are there.”

About you: “You should be a male or female in your mid-twenties or thirties. I understand our economy is in the shitter, but please have stable income and pay the rent on time. Speaking of income, I’d prefer if you didn’t work from home (sorry, writers and artists). I’m not looking for a BFF, but if you prefer to lock yourself in your room, this isn’t the home for you. If you’re from Europe, the U.K. or Australia, you score more points.”

About the space: “The entire apartment is 1,400 square feet, newly renovated with up-to-date appliances (including a dishwasher). It has tons of closets, a private terrace, rooftop access and central air conditioning. Your room is large and sunny (has two windows and a skylight) and comes with a queen-size wooden bed frame and mattress, bookshelf, mirror and bedside table.”

About the space: The lucky winner will pay just $700 for the 1,400-square-foot furnished space, normally on the market for $7,000 a month. Yes, furnished. It even comes with dishes and glassware to make your move hassle-free. Plus, the winner gets some Daffy’s bucks to spend at the stores or the pop-up shop on the ground level of this incredible building (at Seventh Ave South and Carmine St).

How to enter: Stop by any Daffy’s store (just not the pop-up shop) and look for a video submission booth. A manager will set you up to record a 30-second spot explaining why you should win. Read more about it here.

Why I love Cobble Hill, Brooklyn

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Joshua Rothkopf on July 21st, 2009 at 11:38 am

cobblehillmaster2“Pity me, I live in the nicest neighborhood in the city,” says Joshua Rothkopf, TONY’s senior film writer. Fighting words? Not really. “Cobble Hill is a paradise of artisanal restaurants, independently owned shops and lovely residents in sundresses. Where do I go? And still avoid the Smith Street drunkies and interlopers? You so want to click through.” Read more »

    Sublet of the week

Posted in Apartments by Lisa Freedman on July 17th, 2009 at 2:46 pm

Rent a room on St. Marks Place between Second and Third Avenues from now through August!

About the space: The apartment is a 3BR, 1BA, and is on the first floor in the back of the building. The available bedroom room has two windows and a closet. It’s small (about seven-by-nine) but workable. The current roommates are looking for someone immediately through the end of August. The rent is $1,117 a month (and prorated for the remainder of July). Utilities are about $30 per person per month (electric and Internet). It’s a tiny space, but the location is amazing and the occupants have made it a really nice home.

About the people: The two remaining males are clean, friendly, respectful nonsmokers and are looking for the same in a roommate. Someone who likes to recycle and tries to conserve energy is a plus.

    Roommate of the week: Amanda

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on July 16th, 2009 at 11:06 am

picture-11Join her in her 2BR, 1BA historic brownstone apartment in Park Slope on August 1. Monthly rent: $1,275 (includes heat and water)

About her: “I’m a young, sarcastic workaholic who appreciates the finer things in life, such as bento boxes, Heineken beer, Golden Girls marathons and copious amounts of Absolut vodka. I love the neighborhood so most of my free time is spent out and about, but I also love relaxing on my new couch (don’t you want to call it yours as well?).”

About you: “I’m looking for someone with a job, check-writing skills and a sense of humor. I’m not too picky about whom I’d potentially living with—I just want someone who is respectful, will pay the bills on time and not mess up my stuff.”

About the space: “It’s on the second floor, has a huge living room (with separate storage room), office area that you can call your own, tons of storage and closet space, and hardwood flooring throughout. The landlord is on premises—accepts packages while you’re at work and fixes everything immediately. The apartment is furnished with brand-new furniture—a living room set, TV, dining room table and chairs, as well as all kitchen equipment (pots and pans, glasses, dishes, utensils, etc). The bedroom is big enough for a queen/double bed and has a built-in closet with upper storage space. Because the room is the smaller of the two in the apartment, you also get an additional room that is currently being used as an office space. You can do whatever with it (it’s a nice place to put a desk or a comfy chair).”

About the neighborhood: “Right off of Seventh Avenue in Park Slope, the neighborhood has everything you need. The apartment is within walking distance of great restaurants, bars, dry cleaners/Laundromats, Key Food grocery store and more. Only two blocks from Prospect Park. Five- or ten-minute walk from the F train and just a 30-minute ride into midtown Manhattan.”

    Why I love Kingsbridge, Bronx

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on July 14th, 2009 at 11:19 am

picture-1“I grew up here,” says Kristine Garcia, TONY’s online product development director. “It is a tightly knit community of working people and families. It doesn’t have the best shopping, restaurants or bars in the city, but it does have some very good local staples. Kingsbridge is on the border of Van Cortlandt Park and is a bus ride from Riverdale. The constant rumble of the 1 train overhead and the Major Deegan Expressway nearby adds to the neighborhood’s character.”

    Roommate of the week: Kaelyn

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on July 9th, 2009 at 10:41 am

kaelyn-blueJoin her in her 2 BR, 1 BA apartment in Washington Heights on August 1. Monthly rent: $800 (furniture available for purchase if needed)

About Kaelyn: “I’m a dancer, originally from outside Washington D.C., and moved here for college five years ago. Most of my time is occupied by dancing and waitressing to pay the bills, but when I have a free moment I love cooking, photography, playing piano and exploring the city. I know how to have a good time, but prefer to keep my home more of an escape from the craziness of the city. My ideal nights at home include cooking dinner and watching a good movie, or sometimes catching up on my roommate’s week over a pint of Ben and Jerry’s (Half-Baked is my fave!). I’m an old-movie buff and have an awesome DVD collection that I’m willing to share.”

About you: “My main requirement is that you be honest and low drama. I have no preference for a guy or a girl. It would be fantastic if we became good friends, but at the same time, if you just want your space, I’m cool with that too. I’m also looking for someone who likes cats; I’ve got one now named Antigone (don’t ask), and she’s adorable, I swear!”

About the space: “The apartment is a fifth-floor walk-up but totally worth the trek. It was renovated last summer, so it’s in great condition and it gets plenty of sunlight, which is a rarity in many Manhattan spaces. There are hardwood floors in both bedrooms, the living room and the hallway; a new laundry room was just added to the building and it is pretty awesome. It’s right by the 1, 2, 3 and A, C, E subway stations and just a short walk to the Hudson River. Riverside Park is nearby too, so there’s tons of pretty scenery and picnic opportunities, provided it stops raining soon. My roommate is leaving at the end of July, so I’ll need someone from August to May (when the lease is up). You’ll have the option to renew the lease then if you want!

    Why I love East Harlem

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on July 7th, 2009 at 11:50 am

picture-6“My neighborhood isn’t really a destination, and that’s the way I like it,” says Time Out Kids‘ Web editor Raven Snook. Although she grew up across town on the Upper West Side, she moved to East Harlem almost a decade ago. “I came for the low cost of living, but I’ve stayed because it’s laid-back, friendly and convenient. Plus, no drunken college kids!”

    Rommate of the week: Heidee

Posted in Apartments by Lisa Freedman on July 2nd, 2009 at 10:35 am

4509_90888673818_783738818_1819098_2863274_nJoin her in her 2 BR, 3 BA 1,800-square-foot duplex in West Harlem on September 1. Monthly rent: $1,750 (though Heidee is currently attempting to negotiate a lower price with her landlord.)

About Heidee: “I am a 34-year-old emergency room nurse who works 12-hour shifts three or four nights a week, and I work every other weekend. When I get home from work, I like to read,  watch a little TV or just crash. Working in the ER can be pretty grueling. I have an active social life when my schedule allows; and on my long weekends off, I like to get away, especially during the summer.”

About you: “I’m responsible, neat, considerate, and respectful of others’ space and privacy. I expect the same from my roommate.”

About the space: “It’s in a beautiful brownstone building and has exposed brick  and really high ceilings throughout. The first floor has a big living room with a working fireplace, a full bathroom, an enormous kitchen with an open layout, new kitchen appliances (dishwasher/microwave) and a separate dining area with two french doors opening to a balcony. The second floor has the bedrooms, each on opposite sides of the loft-style layout. The room to be rented has its own full bathroom, a working fireplace and a skylight. (Actually, both bedrooms have their own bathrooms and skylights.) There is access to the rooftop and another balcony on the second floor. The apartment has a washer and dryer in the unit.”

About the area: “The apartment is next to St. Nicholas Park in a very quiet and safe neighborhood. I’ve been living here for one and a half years and come home at different hours of the night and have always felt safe. There is street parking and is very easy to find a spot daily. It’s close to the B, C, 1, 2, and 3. The A and D express trains can be taken one stop away. There is a Starbucks, a few Duane Reades, a Pathmark and two New York Sports Clubs within a few blocks from the apartment. The river bike path is easily accessible, and the Riverbank State Park is nearby, which has a soccer field, tennis courts, basketball courts, Olympic-size pool and more.”

    Why I love Park Slope

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on June 23rd, 2009 at 11:35 am

picture-21“Stroller Mafia be damned,” says Amanda Waas, TONY’s brand solutions coordinator, “Park Slope has a bad rep for its obnoxious parents with equally obnoxious, precocious children, but I hate kids and still love this neighborhood. Why? Beautiful brownstones and tree-lined streets mix nicely with delicious restaurants, bars with ample patio space for summer drinking, and cutesy boutiques. Even if you have to take the F train to get there, Park Slope is A-grade.”

    Apartment of the week

Posted in Apartments by Lisa Freedman on June 18th, 2009 at 11:41 am

As a service to you, we spend our Thursdays trying to hook you up with super-amazing roommates throughout the city. But today, we bring you a completely empty apartment that’s ready for you and your BFF to move into come August 1.

About the space: It’s a two-bedroom convertible—the wall is already up but can be taken down if you’re looking for a large one-bedroom—on 86th St and First Ave. The bedrooms are a good size (about nine-by-twelve!) and one is up a spiral staircase, making the layout great for shares. It’s a first-floor walk up that’s bright and sunny and has high ceilings. You’d sign a new yearlong lease for $2,403.50 a month and pay no broker’s fee.

Why it’s empty: One of the gals is moving in with her fiancé and the other is headed downtown. They’re both sad to see the space go but think it’s time for someone else to enjoy their bachelorette pad.

    Why I love Boerum Hill

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on June 16th, 2009 at 10:46 am

Says Jamie Mandel, marketing coordinator: “As a recent transplant from Manhattan’s FiDi, I have fallen head over heels for the homey feel of Boerum Hill, Brooklyn (are those birds I hear?). From its tree-lined streets to the swoonworthy brownstones taunting me on my walk back to my more-affordable apartment, the nabe definitely feels more like my grandparents’ Brooklyn, albeit with tighter jeans.”

    Roommate of the week: Allison

Posted in Apartments, Own This City by Lisa Freedman on June 11th, 2009 at 12:37 pm

    picture-11
Join her in her 2BR apartment on the Upper East Side on August 1. Monthly rent: $1,000 + utilities (approx $100/month)

About Allison: “I’m 25 and a low-maintenance roommate. I keep a tidy apartment, but I’m not a clean freak. Everyone is busy and apartments get dirty, but it’s nice to come back to an apartment that is somewhat clean and manageable. My schedule isn’t the standard nine to five; I try to leave the apartment every day around 10. I love to sleep in and usually don’t surface till noon on the weekends. I come home late a couple nights a week and enjoy going to restaurants and bars frequently. I promise I always go out and never bring the party back to my apartment! I like to have friends over occasionally to drink before going out, but never anything crazy. Depending on your schedule, you may go days without seeing me!”

About you: “I’m looking for a female roommate, preferably between the ages of 24 and 30. You should be conscious of our common areas, and try and keep them clutter-free and clean! I’m not in search of my new BFF, but someone to go grab dinner with or talk to here and there would be great! I am looking for someone who is courteous and respectful of our common areas. No pets, no smoking and no dramatic phone calls yelling at your boyfriend every night, please.”

About the space: “My current roommate just got a job offer and is leaving town (we’re on great terms!). It is a fifth-floor walk-up at 78th St and Second Ave. You would get the bigger bedroom, which is big enough for a double bed. This is for a new lease and you should be willing to sign on for a year.”

About Christy and Erika: “We’re two 25-year-old professionals in the media industry.  Christy works in the online editorial department at timeoutkids.com, and Erika works in marketing. We love to go out and have very busy social lives, but can equally appreciate a night in with a bottle of wine and a DVR full of reality shows.”

About you: “We’re looking for someone, guy or girl, in their twenties who is considerate and clean, and isn’t a homebody; he or she should have as active a social life as we do. We don’t all need to be best friends, but it would be nice to share our apartment with someone we enjoy hanging out with, at least on occasion. Absolutely no pets or live-in boyfriends-girlfriends!”

About the space: “The common area and the room for rent are both fairly large with plenty of natural light. The building was renovated in 2003, so all the appliances are state-of-the-art. If having a dishwasher, elevator and in-building laundry don’t sell you, our roof deck will.”

    Roommate of the Week: Stefanie

Posted in Apartments by Lisa Freedman on May 28th, 2009 at 11:24 am

time-out-photo1Join her and three other ladies in their 4BR, 2BA duplex in Williamsburg on June 1. Monthly rent: $900 + utilities (approx $100/month)

About Stefanie: “I’m a 26-year-old female. I work in music public relations for indie bands and am in grad school part-time in NYU’s food studies program. I enjoy going to shows, new restaurants and bars. I’m not home a ton, but when I am, I’m either doing schoolwork or just hanging out watching bad TV. I’m laid-back, not looking for a best friend, but totally up for having BBQs on the deck or going for dinner together.”

About you: “We would love to share the space with another female between 25 and 35 years old, preferably with a nine-to-five schedule. No pets. We’re looking for someone who is clean with common sense and courtesy, can contribute in the common areas and whom we can get along with. We are very easygoing and respectful girls, and are just looking for the same. Looking for someone long-term; at least six months would be great!”

About the space: “You’d be sharing the upper level, which has its own living room and bathroom, with me. The apartment is in a brownstone and is older, but has a lot of great character. It’s located on a very safe street with parking and is only one stop from the city on the J, M, Z and L trains.”

    Roommate of the week: Laurel

About Laurel: “I’m a full-time assistant editor at a short-mystery-fiction magazine, a freelance writer on food, lesbian issues, Philippines and funny things, and a volunteer fund-raising coordinator for Kamay at Puso (Hand and Heart), a nonprofit that assists toxic-waste survivors. I recently organized the Park Slope Pork Off food competition for the latter. I’m a friendly, undemanding roommate with a senior citizen–y sleep schedule; usually I’m down for the count by 11pm at the latest and up by 8am at the latest. I keep the common areas neat—I straighten the living room after old person–like napping, clean the kitchen after making chicken adobo or chocolate cake, take out the trash, etc.—but my room is usually an unholy mess.”

What she’s looking for: “I’m looking to move to the South Park Slope/Gowanus area in Brooklyn; that’s where my gym, girlfriend and favorite torta place are located. Since my full-time gig requires me to work at home two days a week, it’d be ideal if the place was extra quiet, could accommodate a work nook for me, and had just one or two roommates. Extra points for a dog or kitty, since I like their fuzzy presence even though I can’t get one of my own.”

How much and when? “I can spend $850 max (including utilities), and I gotta be hooked up by July 1!”
