Apparently, there’s an epidemic out there: Eighty-five percent of all women are wearing the wrong size bra. Susan Nethero is on a mission to change that. When she opens the new flagship location of her bra-fitting boutique Intimacy on Thursday, she’ll be one step closer to beautifying the bosoms of America.
Mission: your perfect bra The forthcoming space—her second in NYC and ninth across the country—is double the size of the uptown Intimacy (located at 1252 Madison Ave at 90th St) and boasts a lighter, sleeker design and, even more important, 11 huge fitting rooms. That’s where Nethero’s team of fitters (all of whom have undergone the maestra’s “bra boot camp”) offer free 30-minute consultations, during which customers learn such surprisingly transformative secrets as what size you really are (determined “holistically” without the limitations of a tape measure), how a proper fit will make you look slimmer and taller, what styles complement your body shape, and why straps are nearly superfluous. “It’s like sculpture to me,” says Nethero, who’s offered her expertise to the viewers of Oprah, Tyra, Tim Gunn and others. “Women need to know that their bodies are not to blame for fit problems,” she adds. “It’s about finding the bra that works for you.”
What to buy: Your options here come from a series of upscale European brands—including Aubade, Marie Jo, La Perla and Chantelle—which Nethero argues are superior in quality and beauty to anything made in the U.S. Prices range from $40 to $230 (which sadly doesn’t include dinner, but hey you will get your breasts fondled), and Intimacy provides free alterations for the life of the bra. You can also find sports bras ($50 on average), shapewear such as Spanx, underwear including styles by Hanky Panky ($12–$75); swimwear ($100 and up); and a slew of other undergarment solutions, like Embrace strap adjusters ($8.50), organic lingerie detergent (8-ounce powder $6) and a nifty product called DIMR’S ($32) which, well, keep your headlights dimmed…because you don’t want to ruin your new shape with a few extra points.—Billie Cohen
