“I love Long Island City because it’s the perfect biking distance from my apartment,” says TONY account manger Noelle Stout. “The LIC boundaries technically extend to my address, although most people identify my ’hood as Astoria. Except me; when I travel in certain circles, I say I live in LIC and save myself the poorly masked looks of disdain that accompany mention of Queens. LIC is immune to that because people have heard it’s cool. Most people can’t say so from firsthand experience, making LIC’s best spots largely underpopulated—yet another reason I love it so much.”

Her favorite places to hang out
Gantry Plaza State Park (48th Ave at the East River; 718-786-6385, nysparks.state.ny.us/parks) “After a major renovation, this initially just-okay park with superb views of midtown and the Queensboro Bridge now offers an extended section to include a beautifully manicured lawn and waterfront walkway. The expansive lawn is probably double the size of the waterfront park in Dumbo and features permanent outdoor furniture, perfect for lounging and taking in the view. The park also hosts the neighborhood’s iconic Pespsi-Cola sign, making for a nicely lit evening stroll along the river.”
Tuk Tuk (4906 Vernon Blvd at 49th Ave; 718-472-5598, tuktukny.com). “Tuk Tuk is really good Thai food on the cheap. They used to have a spot in Boerum Hill, but they now call LIC home, much to my enjoyment.”
Her favorite shops
Just Things (4728 Vernon Blvd at 47th Rd, 718-786-3675) “Play stylist for yourself while you sift through a collection of assorted vintage housewares, clothes, games, accessories and furniture. The space is small, but jam-packed, so be prepared to hunt.”
Blue Streak Wines & Spirits (4270 Center Blvd at 48th Ave; 718-706-9463, bluestreakwine.com) “I like to stop here before hitting up the park to pick up a screw-top bottle to keep me company. If you ask nicely, they’ll even give you plastic cups.”
Ethereal (47-38 Vernon Blvd between 47th Rd and 48th Ave; 718-182-8884, etherealnyc.com) “This accessories boutique carries a line from a local design duo known as Auden. The designers, Bryce Castaneda and Steven Gordon, scour vintage shops and flea markets all over the country looking for one-of-a-kind pieces that they can integrate into their modern-looking necklaces, earrings and headbands. Items range from $40 to $200 with a nice selection at the $60–$100 level.”
