A new religious text has surfaced in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, whose seventh commandment warns, “You shall not stop until you get enough”—which is exactly the kind of indulgent ethos that would get someone to write a “10 Laws of the Boogie” creed in the first place. Nevertheless, the Cult of Michael Jackson Chapel holds its official opening reception today at Williamsburg’s Figureworks (168 North 6th St between Bedford and Driggs Aves; 718-486-7021, figureworks.com) from 6 to 9pm.
Part art exhibit, part hard-core shrine, the project was created solely by MJ aficionado Rusel Parish, who has been following and devoting his art to the King of Pop for years. Now you get the chance to see (and maybe even buy) it all; from paintings to dolls to soaps and even chocolate statues, the chapel will provide a sacred space for fans and passersby alike to reflect on the glory that was Michael Jackson.
Director Randall Harris, who founded the gallery ten years ago, explains that Parish had been planning this long before the terrible news came in June. “That’s what’s so weird,” he confides. Really? That’s what’s weird?
