Happy Fourth of July everybody. It would be wrong not to do something free when we’re celebrating our freedom from bad teeth, warm beer and being hassled by the King of England. You can cheer Joey Chestnut at Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest or view a copy of the Declaration of Independence at the New York Public Library,
There’s plenty of free music today too as Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band perform in Battery Park, America’s diversity is celebrated with an eclectic mix of performers at Target First Saturdays: America Remix and 50 bands play at the Brooklyn Tea Party.
Or you could always head over to Liberty and Ellis Islands. Tickets for tours of Lady Liberty’s crown may have sold out, but is there a better day to go and salute her? Check out what you can do if you take the boat here. Then head to these spots to catch fireworks on the Hudson.
There’s plenty more options, including the first Warm Up party of the season, on your perfect Saturday.

My beloved dad who died when I was only 13 yrs old grew up in Brooklyn after he came here from Austria. He took me to the Statue of Liberty all the way up to the crown when I was around 10. It was glorious! FREEDOM!! You are elusive, but once in our grasp, who could ever live without you? May the world snuggle in your arms while singing to the beat of your heart!
