    Free Shake Shack!

Posted in Own This City by Cristina Velocci on June 19th, 2009 at 11:46 am

As our own past reporting confirms,  people have no qualms about eating food that’s being given away on the street, and they’ll do pretty much anything for a free T-shirt. But will they stand outside in the pouring rain for a complimentary cupcake? That’s what we’ll find out this Sunday at noon, when five of New York’s most beloved street-food spots will be doling out gratis grub to the first 500 mooches who arrive. No, it’s not in honor of Father’s Day (remember? you ditched him at home to wait in line), but rather in anticipation of the upcoming film (500) Days of Summer, starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (in theaters July 17). Forecast for the first official day of summer? Showers. But something tells us there could be a typhoon looming and people would still wait around for a free Shack Burger. Full details and locations after the jump.

Cupcake Stop: Fifth Ave between 13th and 14th Sts
Mud Truck: Sheridan Square, Seventh Ave at 4th St
    Treats Truck: Location TBD
Wafels & Dinges: Marcus Garvey Memorial Park at 125th St
Shake Shack: Madison Square Park; 77th S(500) Days of Summert at Columbus Ave
