Call me immature. But I think that the best thing about Gov. David Paterson’s proactive—if possibly pointless and even damaging—announcement that he’ll reintroduce his gay-marriage bill to the state legislature is how it’s like a direct flipping of the bird to god-awful Archbishop Timothy Dolan. The cringe-inducing Dolan publicly vowed to fight marriage equality just yesterday. Today, Paterson said he’ll introduce his bill and enourage a vote in order to send a message (and to not look foolish next to Iowa and Vermont, of course) that New York State does not discriminate. Though there is not currently enough support in the State Senate to approve such a measure, many advocates say the vote should move ahead anyway, so that legislators can be accountable for their positions. So no word yet on whether today’s move will help Paterson’s approval rating. But his moxie alone has moved him up a notch in my book.
