Sure, you could just hop the state line and get hitched any ol’ place in Connecticut, which legalized same-sex marriage back in October. Or you could embrace the fabulously fun and cliché, and opt for a P-town wedding this summer. But now, with Vermont and Iowa just added to the growing list of states letting queers tie the knot, why not put a little thought into your countrified wedding trip? We consulted some travel guidebooks for a little Green Mountain State/Hawkeye State comparison.Vermont’s got plenty to draw you: Mount Mansfield and the rolling Green Mountains, cool college town Burlington, the gorgeous Lake Champlain Islands, endless cozy B&Bs and (take note, lesbians) the Ben & Jerry’s factory—not to mention a slew of those darned romantic covered bridges. But hey, The Bridges of Madison County was based just outside of Des Moines, in surprisingly scenic Iowa—home to progressive Iowa City (including the University of Iowa and its famed Iowa Writers’ Workshop), the Obama-voting Iowa caucus, the yoga-hippie town of Vedic City (location of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s meditation university!) and the lovely Loess Hills Scenic Byway, perfect for a romantic honeymoon road trip. Or you could just ditch the U.S. altogether and head to the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Spain or Sweden, which, on April 2 and with little fanfare, became the fifth European country to allow gay marriage.
