Members of the Coney Island Polar Bear club suited up this morning—in bathing suits, that is—for an hour-long ride on the Hudson, sponsored by Circle Line. What compels someone to spend their morning on a boat in frigid temperatures in little more than a bikini? (And seriously, people: it was cold.) A good cause, of course: Members collected pledges for participating in the ride and for each minute that they remained clothing-free, with the money benefiting the Bronx Zoo and the New York Aquarium. Everyone was chipper, posing for photos in front of the Statue of Liberty and hamming it up; it wasn’t until the boat swung around Lady Liberty and headed to 42nd Street that we felt the gusty, skin-chafing winds. And the good news: Most of the riders stayed out for the full 60 minutes, raising a bunch of dough for the two institutions.
