Taking a page right out of the Obama playbook, author Dennis Lehane is now selling custom T-shirts to help raise money and awareness for his chosen cause—in this case, neglected children. The Gone Baby Gone scribe has teamed with PROTECT (the National Organization to Protect Children) to sell shirts based on themes and characters from his best-selling books. Shirts retail for $25 plus shipping, and all proceeds go toward helping the kids. And, you know, even if you don’t give a hoot for the Oliver Twists of the world, it’s probably tax deductible… So, which is your favorite, anyway?.
Update: Brian Petkash, an advisory board member of PROTECT, had this to say about tax deductions: “Unfortunately, no, donations to PROTECT are not tax deductible as we’re structured as an IRS social welfare organization, or 501(c)(4). In our mind, while we know tax deductions are important, many tax-deductible charities—especially those that sometimes need to push hard to advocate for change—have their hands tied. Our hands aren’t tied by the same restrictions the IRS places on most child advocacy groups.”
So just do it for the kids, already!
