Rubin Singer definitely deserved the standing ovation he received Friday afternoon. That’s right. The clothes were so great, they warranted standing, and not "show’s over let’s get out of here quickly" standing.
The show started even before everyone was seated, with the sounds of seagulls squawking. Then a ship’s horn was heard, and the show (titled "Voyage") set sail. What followed was playful music, from "Fever" to Christina Aguilera, accompanying clothing that at once evoked the sophistication of Jackie O. and the elegance of Grace Kelly. Whether the voyage was to a more romantic era or to a luxurious port town was unclear, but I wanted some of both. And the whole show really went that way. There was a little bit of everything, from stiff collars to long flowing gowns, navy stripes and polka dots to vibrant tropical prints.
And what’s more, these were "real people" clothes. Sure, many of them were too fancy for the average person, but they were also the types of pieces that the average woman (read: not a model) could still wear, and what’s more, feel attractive in. Even those incredibly high-fashion pieces, like the black-and-white coat with the huge collar that looks like it jumped off the cover of Vogue sometime in the ’40s, were the types of things you yearned to wear. In fact, there wasn’t a single piece in the line that I didn’t like. It’s official. I’m in love.
