Walking around the Bryant Park tents today, we overheard someone say, “Fashion Week is like summer camp twice a year,” and frankly, we get mixed feelings about that thought. Did they mean in the way that beautiful designer clothes remind us of showing off our sassy new bathing suit at camp, or did they mean that those long waits for shows to start kind of make us think of having to stand in a heinous line for the diving board just to do a pencil? Regardless, there were great and not so great moments at camp, just like at Fashion Week.
And Erin Fetherston’s spring collect fell somewhere in the middle. We were left a bit confused, because it seemed she had three collections in one—sequins, tie-dye and oversize marshmallow ruffles. Here’s what we’re thinking: Fetherston’s collection looked good on models and would rock fashion magazine spreads, but not so much on the ordinary gal. The excess of sequins is difficult to pull off without looking like a child dressing up in ruby slippers, and the larger-than-model ruffles are too huge for anyone to strut in. But we are inspired by Fetherston’s collection and will tone it down a notch with sequined headbands and baby-ruffled tiered skirts. How’s that for taking runway looks and making them wearable?
