Earlier this summer, The Kid Daytona put out Come Fly with Me, an excellent free-download release boosted by production from 6th Sense and other standout features. This past week, photographer Dan Dealy caught up with Daytona, Bun B, 6th and director Derek Pike at the video shoot for the Kid’s “Air Born.” Filmed sans permit downtown with EBC star Africa, the video teams two of the most laid-back MCs in the game with a rising-star director who has put together videos for the likes of Young Chris, Raekwon and Havoc.

This past Sunday, hip-hop came to the hipsters as the Hieroglyphics MC closed out a sweltering day in the sun. Opening for Del was the famed producer Prince Paul, spinning hip-hop classics alongside his daughter to gear up the crowd for Del’s energetic set. Before he took the stage, we caught up with the Funky One to talk about his latest collaborative effort with MC Tame One, Parallel Uni-Verses. Featuring production by the Parallel Thought duo, the album skillfully sidesteps the politics and materialism plaguing much mainstream hip-hop. Look for the release in September, via Gold Dust Media.

It’s been a long wait to find out who/what was going to replace the free McCarren Pool shows, but we’ve finally got a lineup and, boy, is it a doozy! The shows will be taking place starting at 2pm at the Williamsburg Waterfront (East River State Park, 90 Kent Ave at North 9th St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn) every Sunday for eight weeks. That’s right; these concerts are not actually in a pool anymore. And if you don’t like music that much and are just going to pick up chicks or out-hipster the rest, there will be dodgeball and three-on-three basketball.
Also, here’s a little note that we found interesting from the press release: Disclaimer: Any and all underage drinking at The Pool Parties will result in prompt eviction from the premises and not being allowed to return for the duration of the series.
They should probably tell the Black Lips not to drink too.
Don’t feel like braving the scalpers at tonight’s sold-out Mogwai show at Music Hall of Williamsburg? Get the scoop on what you’re missing here and read on for some choice alternatives.
Topping our show list for tonight are two very different types of rock icons. First up, there’s The Dead, finishing up its triumphant four-night NYC-area run at Izod Center. And then there’s David Thomas—frontman of the legendary Cleveland art-punk unit Pere Ubu—offering a spoken-word set at Bowery Poetry Club. This man’s weirdness is no mild thing; behold him in action on the ultra-eclectic and sadly long defunct Night Music:
Too out-there for you? Try these:
*John Pizzarelli brings his suave jazz-guitar stylings to the Blue Note.
*Mysterious local singer Cheval Sombre will likely present his arresting cover of the Doors’ “Hyacinth House” when he opens for Spectrum at Death by Audio. (Read Jay Ruttenberg’s preview here and check out a track here.)
*Hip-hop veteran Del the Funky Homosapien brings his quirky rhymes to B.B. King Blues Club & Grill.
*Old-school freak-folk icons The Fugs headline a benefit for an ailing filmmaker at the Bell House.
