  • Jelly Pool Parties: Facing the ax?

Posted in The Volume by The Volume on November 18th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Loved the Jelly Pool Parties over the summer (and last year)? Yeah, so did we. This summer’s events featured Grizzly Bear, Girl Talk, the Black Lips, Dirty Projectors, Deerhunter, Dan Deacon, No Age, Mission of Burma, Beach House, Simian Mobile Disco, Wiz Khalifa—and who can forget Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz proudly introducing “Effed Up!”? Well, according to Jelly’s press release today, the future of the Pool Parties could be in jeopardy: “News came from the New York State Parks Department and the Open Space Alliance that the East River State Park may not be available to Jelly for the 2010 season. This will ultimately put an end to the flourishing free summer series.”

The day in music news: New Washed Out track, Dan Deacon video and more

Posted in The Volume by Raquel Villarreal on August 21st, 2009 at 3:45 pm

    Washed Out

“Belong” is the latest track from Washed Out, a.k.a. Ernest Green, available here. Look out for High Times to be released on cassette mid-September, and for a six-song 12-inch release from Mexican Summer as well. [Fader]

A Dan Deacon puppet rocks out with  ghosts and a pirate in the cutesy video for “Paddling Ghost.” [Pitchfork]

Radiohead drummer Phil Selway plays a caressing tune, “The Witching Hour,” here. It’s slated to appear on the 7 Worlds Collide charity album The Sun Came Out, due September 29. Craving more? Here’s “The Ties That Bind Us.” [Stereogum]

A whole lot of CDs (71) containing the complete Miles Davis collection will drop November 10. [Pitchfork]

For her upcoming fourth studio album, Norah Jones joins forces with Ryan Adams and Okkervil River frontman Will Sheff to compose new material. [Spin]

    And from the TONY desk:

The legendary John Fogerty will play next Wednesday at South Street Seaport, and catch his latest single here while you’re at it. [The Volume]

Click here to read up on Black Dice’s hair-vibrating performance yesterday at Santos Party House. [The Volume]

Watch Marcus and E.J. Strickland and Josh Ginsburg’s in-office performance of “Cuspy’s Delight,” and catch the first two playing tonight at Joe’s Pub. [The Volume]

    The weekend’s must-see shows

Posted in The Volume by Hank Shteamer on July 31st, 2009 at 8:57 am
    Jay-Z

The big story this weekend is All Points West. For the second year in a row, the New York City area has a big festival to call its own, and the lineup has a little something for everyone. Yes, Jay-Z has replaced the Beastie Boys, and yes, Tool and Coldplay headline other nights. But, Friday through Sunday isn’t all about the name acts: Check out our preview of the shows here for some lesser-known highlights.

Other than APW, you’re still looking at a stacked weekend.

    Friday
A trio of dark bands—Brutal Truth, Pig Destroyer and Repulsion—kick off Blackened Music Series at Brooklyn Masonic Temple. Read our show preview here.

The Mekons, punk’s great British-American collective, play the Bell House. (They also play Mercury Lounge Saturday.) Read our show preview here.

AC/DC rocks Giants Stadium with a little help from Anvil, stars of the recent documentary film Anvil! The Story of Anvil.

Weirdos from the ’90s indie scene Polvo play South Street Seaport, with support from also aging, also excellent Obits.

    Saturday
Luna vets Dean & Britta soundtrack Andy Warhol’s “Screen Tests” at Celebrate Brooklyn at Prospect Park.

Wistful and scrappy are the name of the game for Cass McCombs’s show with Jennifer O’Connor at Union Hall.

The biggest name in the biz, Lil Wayne, busts rhymes at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater.

Indie hero M. Ward headlines a show at Central Park SummerStage, but we’re really intrigued by the pairing of former Minuteman Mike Watt and Wilco guitar shredder Nels Cline in the opening slot. Check back at the Volume (or see above) for a recent in-office performance from Watt.

    Sunday
If you’re not heading out to APW, you’ll no doubt want to see three big indie acts—Dan Deacon, Deerhunter and No Age—swap songs in a round-robin-style shit show.

Later, the cocky Catfish Haven plays The Bell House for a nice end to your weekend.

The Jelly Pool Parties finally announces lineup

Posted in The Volume by Colin St. John on July 2nd, 2009 at 6:00 pm

poolbannerIt’s been a long wait to find out who/what was going to replace the free McCarren Pool shows, but we’ve finally got a lineup and, boy, is it a doozy! The shows will be taking place starting at 2pm at the Williamsburg Waterfront (East River State Park, 90 Kent Ave at North 9th St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn) every Sunday for eight weeks. That’s right; these concerts are not actually in a pool anymore. And if you don’t like music that much and are just going to pick up chicks or out-hipster the rest, there will be dodgeball and three-on-three basketball.

Also, here’s a little note that we found interesting from the press release: Disclaimer: Any and all underage drinking at The Pool Parties will result in prompt eviction from the premises and not being allowed to return for the duration of the series.

They should probably tell the Black Lips not to drink too.

Check the full lineup after the jump…

Day of Show: Your weekend concert guide

Posted in The Volume by The Volume on May 15th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
    Sonic Youth

    Sonic Youth

This weekend is going to be fun. Especially if you go to No Fun. The annual noise gathering takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Be sure to read our breakdown with mastermind Carlos Giffoni here and our conversation about the noise community with Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore here.

So what else is going on?

    Friday
Dan Deacon flips the dance party switch to the “On” position at 979 Broadway in Bushwick. He also plays two shows at the Bowery Ballroom tomorrow. (Read our review of his new one, Bromst, here.)

Melvins do Houdini at Webster Hall.

Azita harkens back to ’70s singer-songwriters at Bruar Falls.

The Brooklyn Folk Festival kicks off at the Jalopy.

    Saturday
Head over to the Brooklyn Armory for a huge Mexican bash: Los Tigres del Norte tear the place up Saturday.

Freak-folk forebear Henry Flynt plays his second show in a quarter of a century, at the Stone. (Read our show preview here.)

The legendary Leonard Cohen hits Radio City Music Hall tonight and tomorrow.

    Sunday
Sam Beam plays from his new rarities collection as Iron & Wine at the Abrons Art Center.

The Vaselines play a rare one tonight (and tomorrow) on the back of a deluxe career-retrospective release. The show to end your weekend is at the Bowery Ballroom.

    Now Playing: Dan Deacon

Posted in The Volume by Sophie Harris on March 17th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Dan DeaconAh, bliss.… Though Baltimore electro whiz Dan Deacon might be a thoroughly modern kind of chap, this gorgeous, understated piece of ambient music (featured on his newie, Bromst) recalls the lovelier moments on Brian Eno’s Another Green World—from the gently buzzing bass tones and twinkles at its start, to the layered, rather stiff male vocal that kicks in ’round about halfway through, along with a beat that’s almost impossible not to nod along to. The vocal gets cut and spliced and whizzed around, spazzes out briefly, and then it’s back to that sweet melody. Oh, Eno! Quit hanging out with Bono, and make friends with Dan Deacon! Please?

    Snookered - Dan Deacon
