This weekend’s weather was a major tease: The skies looked ready to pour at any moment but really only let out a few spurts here and there. That’s probably why the Pool Party at East River State Park wasn’t packed to the gills like it had been in previous weeks. A sizable crowd still showed, as did some repeat offenders over on the dodgeball court. (I’ve seen a handful of these dudes at every single Pool Party and have come to the conclusion that they don’t listen to a lick of music.)
By and large, though, the young and hip were there for the tunes and were rewarded handsomely. The Fiery Furnaces belted out guitar-driven songs heavy on the new I’m Going Away. The siblings Friedberger are at the top of their game, leaning more toward rock & roll than weirdo noise blasts and really letting Eleanor’s energetic singing shine.
After the Furnaces, Simian Mobile Disco turned an increasingly darkening afternoon into a full-on dance party. Deejaying from the stage, the British duo pushed the speaker system to the edge and employed the use of a few live horns (including a crowd-surfing tuba player who you can see for yourself below). The group’s efforts paved the way for a super jumpy, hands-in-the air scene.
