Left-field guitar hero Gary Lucas is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking work alongside Captain Beefheart in the early ’80s—on this and other amazing records. But he’s also a seasoned bandleader, a fact that ought to be abundantly clear at Gramercy Theatre next Thursday, June 11, when the local mainstay leads his band Gods and Monsters in a 20th anniversary performance. (If you’re not familiar with the group, you’ll surely recognize some of its past and present personnel, which includes Jeff Buckley, Matthew Sweet, Television drummer Billy Ficca and Modern Lovers bassist Ernie Brooks.) Lucas was all alone when he stopped by TONY earlier this week to plug the gig, but this rendition of his original tune “Fata Morgana” was so incendiary, we doubt you’ll mind:
