We here at TONY are huge fans of the Bang on a Can folk and their ever-innovative assaults on classical-music orthodoxy. So when we heard about BOAC’s new Asphalt Orchestra—a mobile street band that makes its debut at Lincoln Center Out of Doors August 5 through August 9—and its brilliantly diverse repertoire, we knew we had to get an advance look. Check out this exclusive behind-the-scenes video by Elizabeth Kreutz for rehearsal footage and interviews with Asphalt Orchestra musicians Ken Thomson and Jessica Schmitz, as well as the ensemble’s choregrapher, Susan Marshall. And get a load of the list of composers whose works the group is tackling: Stew of Passing Strange, Björk, Frank Zappa, Charles Mingus, Tyondai Braxton of Battles, Swedish math-metal pioneers Meshuggah and Balkan wedding-band maverick Goran Bregovic, among others.
