Play count: Hip-hop on repeat this week

Posted in The Volume by Jamie Falkowski on June 4th, 2009 at 3:22 pm

Welcome to Play Count, the Volume’s weekly mix of the best in recent hip-hop. In this edition, new music from Mickey Factz, Termanology, Mike Posner, Mos Def and more.

Click past the jump for commentary.

Mike Posner ft. Izza Kizza - “Kiss Me Through the Phone”
Izza Kizza jumps onto Posner’s reinterpretation of the Soulja Boy single. Almost as good as Posner’s take on Beyoncé’s “Halo” from A Matter of Time.

Mos Def ft. Talib Kweli - “History”
BlackStar finally regroups for this J Dilla produced cut from Mos Def’s The Ecstatic. Unfortunately, the album leaked this week and was pushed back to August 24th.

Albe Back ft. Naledge & 88-Keys - “Walk on By”
Premiered by 2dopeboyz, Albe brings in 88-Keys and Naledge for the assists. If you missed it, check out his mixtape Hi from back in April.

    Termanology - “Nothing Iz Real”
Term laces M. Will’s track for the producer’s upcoming A Journey Through Space & Time, a promising first glimpse at things to come from M. Will, who is also Marley Marl’s son.

    The Dropouts - “Cop Trees”
The Inglewood natives El Prez & Dnez together are the Dropouts, and this is their gift to all the Left Coast smokers–a new jam to ride out to. Produced by Jansport J.

    Wale - “Family Affair”
Another track from the Rik Cordero, Inside a Change project. Last week we featured Saigon’s contribution, “Change Gon Come.”

Mickey Factz ft. Kid Cudi - “Do My Do”
Two of the brightest rising stars in hip-hop team up for Mickey’s upcoming project, The Guggenheim. Produced by GFC’s Precize.

Drake ft. Trey Songz - “Replacement Girl (Chuck Inglish Remix)”
The Cool Kids’ Chuck Inglish provides his second remix to a Drake track. This cut comes as a bonus to Timbuck2’s Drake Live in Chicago.
