Summer is the season for teen romance; longing always feels that much sweeter when it’s accompanied by a warm breeze and a really killer tune, like “The Ice Cream Song” by the Dynamics or “Summer Babe” by Pavement or any early Beach Boys song. And making a modern claim on the great summer crush song is “Orange Shirt” by Discovery—the team of Rostam Batmanglij from Vampire Weekend and Wes Miles from Ra Ra Riot. It’s the opening track on the duo’s forthcoming album, LP (due July 7), which features contributions elsewhere from Ezra Vampire Weekend and Angel Dirty Projectors. Shimmering in on a lazy fuzz of bass and hand claps, “Orange Shirt” is basically Casio’d-up R&B; you know how R.Kelly takes that sung-commentary thing to an extreme in Trapped in the Closet? Miles sings like that here. But for all its apparent modernity (“Every text that I get from you is so serious” frowns Miles), this is good old-fashioned teen swooning. Listen for yourself right here.
