This past weekend marked the fifth annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, and despite an afternoon of intermittent rainfall, crowds showed up in droves throughout the eight-hour day to support their own. Check out our video for performance clips from Brown-Bag All Stars, Donny Goines and Tanya Morgan, along with more behind-the-scenes action, and read on for a recap.
Different from the bigger hip-hop packages like Rock the Bells that will be touring the U.S. all summer, this is a show that seems purely for New York, and it affords an opportunity for the artists to give back. Almost all MCs who performed took to the stage for free, and although entrance was gratis, the majority of patrons contributed a donation to keep the event going. Local businesses also showed their support, with booths ranging from Brooklyn Brewery to FLUD Watches and Hoodman Clothing.
With the rain came some changes to the lineup, with all acts sharing one stage instead of two, and moving underneath the tents at Empire–Fulton Ferry State Park. Although the sets were kept a bit short, no one could complain about the range of talent set to hit the stage. Early performances included local artists Nyle, Brokn English, Keys and Krates and Brown Bag All-Stars who all received as much love from the crowds as the big-name artists. The day was kept lively with Black Thought of the Roots, Brand Nubian and D.I.T.C all blessing the stage with surprise cameos, before a feature lineup of Pharoahe Monch, DJ Premier, Dead Prez and Styles P of the LOX.
