It’s so perfect that the Spinto Band hails from Delaware, one of the smallest states in America, given the diminutive stature of its six members. They each all look about 15 years old, so it kind of beggars belief that they’ve released five albums already. And maybe it’s their sheer exuberance that makes the band seem so young and, well, boingy.
A roasting afternoon at the Red House pizzeria, just out of town, found the boys playing favorite cuts including “Oh Mandy,” while jumping, harmonizing, running on the spot and, in the case of the singer, playing a kazoo that he’d fixed around his neck using a wire coat hanger, an improved version of the harmonica head brace.
Skinnily-jeaned bands who also played the Red House this weekend included Hymns and Violens, both of whom hail from NYC, and both bands playing thoroughly by-the-book stuff. The former drew not on Exile-era Stones so much as last-gasp Primal Scream (though their guitarist played a pretty mean ax). Violens is clearly in thrall to Brit bands the Smiths and the Jam—which is funny, ‘cause the London band that preceded them, Mumford and Sons, is made up of bluegrass nuts.

It’s clearly a joy for the Mumford crew to be away from the rain and grayness of London (I haven’t checked a forecast, but it’s a sure thing), even though they go progressively pinker through their set. Little kids, old fellas and hipsters alike wig out (okay, nod happily) to their set, a mixture of twangin’ banjo and heart-on-sleeve, rockin’ poetics (the banjo player’s shiny British soccer shirt is also testament to the fact that clothes do not maketh the band).
After dark, the outdoor revelry and alfresco binge-smoking continued at Ms Bea’s, the ace little venue across town curated by NYC’s Todd P (we mentioned it Friday). With some bands choosing not to play the little stage, but instead playing in a clearing by the trees—including, fittingly, the excellent, falsetto-led combo Woods—the low lights on the leaves made it look like folks were clustered around a campfire. A lovely thing indeed.

Thanks for coming Sophie and it was very nice to meet you and John Mark….You brought more brightness to the Red House with your smile and your sun dresses!
