As it turns out, reports of soul music’s death were premature. In the past few years, we’ve had great records by Amy Winehouse, Raphael Saadiq and, of course, the whole Daptone crew. Tonight, yet another gifted soul revivalist, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, headlines the Bell House. The young Boston singer is joined, as always, by his band, the True Loves. A pair of awesome rising ’60s-sounding bands get things started, the Sweet Divines and Jenny Dee and the Delinquents. And there are other shows, too!
-The Spirit of Apollo, the new record by N.A.S.A., features such fancy guests as Kanye West, David Byrne and M.I.A. Who will show up when N.A.S.A. plays (Le) Poisson Rouge tonight?
-Greg Ginn, architect of Black Flagg, plays Googie’s Lounge Over the Living Room (of all places).
-Kristin Hersh does double duty, as her old band, Throwing Muses, headlines Music Hall of Williamsburg and her new bar band, 50 Foot Wave, opens.
-Odean Pope’s Saxophone Choir begins a four-night stand at Blue Note.
-Over at Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza (the venue still known as “Irving Plaza”), veteran roots band Los Lobos does its thing.
