  • The Feed outings: Beefless Burgers, board games and beer, and Tattoo Night at Concrete

Posted in Eat Out by Jonathan Shannon on September 2nd, 2009 at 12:00 am

    Beefless Burgers
Stocking up on chuck for your Labor Day BBQ? Not so fast. At this beefless burger class, you can learn to make great patties without the moo. Orianne Cosentino (Green Table) will lead students through four recipes that omit the beef but not the flavor. The menu ranges from hearty (chipotle buffalo burgers) to healthy (a chickpea-walnut version with rosemary yogurt). The class will end with a meal. Bowery Culinary Center, Whole Foods Market, 95 E Houston St at Bowery (877-365-3836). 6–9pm, $55.

    Board games and beer
You might dominate at Donkey Kong, but can you bring it for Pictionary? Kick some ass and take some pawns at the Village Pourhouse’s weekly board-game night, where you’ll find old-school faves. Get a head start on the competition during happy hour (5–7pm) with $2 Buds and two-for-one margaritas and cocktails. FREE Village Pourhouse, Third Ave at 11th St (212-979-2337, villagepourhouse.com).7–10pm.

    Tattoo Night at Concrete
Rock your body art (or admire someone else’s) at this monthly gathering, hosted by tattoocentric blog Breaking the Skin. Ink aficionados can knock back discount booze: $6 martinis and house wines, and $4 drafts and bottles. Adornment isn’t required to take part—but if you feel the need to justify your “I ♥ Clay Aiken” tat, Breaking the Skin will be conducting video interviews for the blog. FREE Concrete, 320 W 37th St between Eighth and Ninth Aves (212-967-9121, concretenyc.com). 8–11pm.

    PR stunts: John Hughes tribute

Sixteen Candles, a John Hughes classic

Sixteen Candles, a John Hughes classic

Just when you were getting bored of drinking for MJ, another pop culture icon kicks the bucket. Angels & Kings was ahead of the curve this time, beating the serial exploiters at the Village Pourhouse to a Hughes tribute night, featuring two-buck domestic beers and screenings of some of the writer-director’s films. It’s happening on Thursday at 8pm. and there’s no cover. Because, you know, charging a cover is in really poor taste.

Things to boycott: Michael Jackson pub crawl

Posted in Eat Out by Jordana Rothman on July 1st, 2009 at 11:47 am

    michaeljackson

City Winery’s Michael Dorf may have been quick on the trigger with his controversial MJ tribute event, but the question of taste seemed to have at least occurred to him. The same can’t be said of the Village Pourhouse group, which fired off an e-mail chockablock with hee-hawing Jacko references this morning about its upcoming King of Pop pub crawl. This is parasitic gutter PR at its most vile.

Read the entire e-mail after the jump—at peril of encouraging any undue patronage, we’ve redacted the locations of the crawl. Read more »

    Booze Beat: Fleeced!

Warm and mobile: the joy of the snuggie

Warm and mobile: The joy of the Snuggie.

The  kitschy, cultish appeal of the Snuggie (a “blanket with sleeves”) continues to inexplicably lure otherwise-serious New Yorkers into its staticky embrace. The Feed has covered previous Snuggie events, but questionable news value aside, we couldn’t resist one more, the Snuggie Pub Crawl.
