The James Beard Foundation asserted its relevance with the upper echelon of foodists once again at its annual Chefs & Champagne tasting event at the Wölffer Estate Vineyards in Sagaponack, New York. The Hamptons vineyard was also host to the gala in ‘08, just a few months before patriarch Christian Wölffer succumbed in a chilling boating accident last New Year’s Eve. Although the Four Seasons twins, Julian Niccolini and Alex Von Bidder, were ostensibly the event’s honorees, the afternoon was really about Wölffer’s legacy (a scholarship in his name was announced amid chatter, under the humid tents). Chef Missy Robbins: Work it.
One may imagine that chef Missy Robbins’s crowning moments might have been the many times she cooked for the Obamas. At her former post, Spiaggia in Chicago, “the Obamas always came alone, just the two of them, and ordered the tasting menu,” she tells TONY. “It was obvious they loved food.” At A Voce, Robbins is busy fine-tuning her kitchen crew and seducing us with roasted sardines that were one of our top 10 eats of 2008.
