In addition to this week’s opening of Bar Henry, the following restaurants are expected to open by November 18th. Always call ahead, as opening dates can change.

Maialino Danny Meyer channels his love of Italy into this Roman-style trattoria in the Gramercy Park Hotel, offering dinner only for now. A casual front room, dubbed Bar Maialino, will serve coffee and pastry in the morning (Meyer’s first foray into breakfast) and Italian wines and beers later in the day. In the dining room, chef Nick Anderer will offer classics such as fritto misto and Rome’s offalcentric quinto quarto cooking. Gramercy Park Hotel, 2 Lexington Ave at 21st St (no phone yet)

Northern Spy Food Co. San Francisco chefs Christophe Hille (A16) and Nathan Foot (Myth) will introduce New Yorkers to their seasonal, market-driven cooking at this restaurant and retail store. Expect reasonably priced American dishes—with an emphasis on takeout and delivery—and locally sourced foods for sale in the store. 511 E 12th St between Aves A and B (212-228-5100)

Café Mei Mei Chef Robert Ribant (River Café) opens a seasonal American restaurant with a modern design that includes floor tiles patterned after a Mondrian painting. Market-driven specials will feature dry-aged prime steak, foie gras and other delicacies. Wines and beers are planned, but until the license clears, expect free pours on Fridays and Saturdays. 231 Court St between Baltic and Warren Sts, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn (718-852-8571)

The Mermaid Oyster Bar Restaurateurs Danny Abrams and Cindy Smith bring a New England–style fish shack to the West Village with this Mermaid Inn spin-off. Expect lobster rolls and raw-bar selections, as well as downscale dishes like tacos, fried calamari and clam strips. 79 MacDougal St between Bleecker and W Houston Sts (212-260-0100) Read more »

François Chocolate Bar, the new boutique-within-a-boutique from pastry chef François Payard, has opened today on the fourth floor of the jewelry store Mauboussin. Expect a café serving the jewel-like chocolate confections pictured in this sneak peek slide show (what you see above are layered desserts called verrines). In addition to Manhattan Inn opening this week, the following restaurants and bars are expected to open no later than November 11. Always call ahead before heading out, since openings can sometimes be delayed.

Cafe DuCharme On September 14, Swiss national Christian DuCharme stepped off a plane in New York with the idea of opening a café. He realized his vision in record time, debuting a homey space in Park Slope less than two months later. The menu includes coffee (New York’s Dallis), as well as pastries from Ceci-Cela and breads from Sullivan Street Bakery. Diners can order breakfast items such as homemade muesli and smoked salmon with toast. Savory dishes, including salads and sandwiches, are available all day. 668 President St between Fifth and Sixth Aves, Park Slope, Brooklyn (646-288-7644)

Purple Yam Amy Besa and Romy Dorotan made their reputation serving expertly prepared Filipino food at their now shuttered Soho restaurant, Cendrillon. Ditmas Park residents are the lucky recipients of their next project, a bamboo-accented Pan-Asian eatery serving small plates. Fans of the original can look forward to old favorites like pork adobo, alongside new additions such as homemade kimchi and a variety of noodles, including Korea’s japchae and the Phillipine’s pancit bihon (rice noodles cooked with pork, chicken, vegetables and stock). A selection of Asian beers, shochu and sake will be available to pair with the food. 1314 Cortelyou Rd between Argyle and Rugby Rds, Ditmas Park, Brooklyn (718-940-8188) Read more »

Last month TONY examined food and drink trends past, present and future. In the bars category we considered speakeasies (past), beer gardens (present) and the future arrival of what we dubbed “renaissance bars,” neighborhood spots with serious intentions on all fronts—cocktails, beers, wines, even food. The example we gave for the new prototype was Manhattan Inn, a then yet-to-arrive gastropub from the owners of Greenpoint’s Glasslands Gallery, Brooke Baxter and Rolyn Hu. Well, as they say, the future is now, and Manhattan Inn is expected to open to the public next week, on November 4th. Read more »

The Feed openings: Northern Spy Food Co. gets its gas, could open soon

Posted in Eat Out by Daniel Gritzer on October 29th, 2009 at 5:58 pm

northernspy1One of the bigger openings expected this winter is Pulino’s Bar and Pizzeria, the collaboration between Keith McNally and Nate Appleman (formerly of San Francisco’s Neapolitan pizzeria A16). But while we all wait with bated breath for that project, another team with an A16 history is getting ever closer to revealing its East Village project: Northern Spy Food Co. Read more »

In addition to the Tipsy Parson opening this week, the following restaurants and bars are also expected to open by November 4. Always call ahead before heading out since opening dates can change.

Le Caprice One of London’s poshest eateries, from restaurateur Richard Caring, hops across the pond to the Upper East Side. The 90-seat dining room echoes the British original, with a black-and-white palette, as well as images of ’60s fashion model Jean Shrimpton by photographer David Bailey. The menu, meanwhile, presents bistro fare from executive chef Michael Hartnell (The Ivy), including a fancified bunless burger going by the name Chopped Steak Americaine, and a salmon fish cake with buttered spinach and sorrel sauce. The Pierre, 795 Fifth Ave at 61st St (212-940-8195)

Accademia di Vino Broadway Executive chef Kevin Garcia (’Cesca) opens a smaller sister location to his UES Italian restaurant and wine bar. Expect a similar menu of grilled pizzas (such as a seasonal one with pumpkin, pancetta and caramelized onion), as well as a raw-bar nod (carpaccio, crudo) to the space’s previous tenant, Dock’s. An extensive wine library of more than 500 mostly Italian bottles will also be available, including 40 by the glass. 2427 Broadway between 89th and 90th Sts (212-787-3070) Read more »

Early next week, Little Giant co-owners Tasha Garcia Gibson and Julie Taras Wallach will unveil their homey new restaurant, Tipsy Parson (156 Ninth Ave between 19th and 20th Sts, 212-620-4545), focusing on regional American and Southern cooking. Dishes will include classics such as chicken and dumplings, as well as original creations like an apple-butter–glazed pork shank. Look for a range of specialties from the bar: hand-sliced Virginia hams; head-on prawns and oysters from a raw bar; Southern cheeses courtesy of Stinky Bklyn; and seasonal juleps, like a Concord grape version dispensed from a frozen drink machine. To whet your appetite, check out the slide show above, and the full menu after the jump. Read more »

The following bars and restaurants are expected to open by October 28. Always call ahead as openings can be delayed.

The Vanderbilt Saul Bolton, chef-owner of Smith Street pioneer Saul Restaurant, has teamed up with Num Pang’s Ben Daitz to open this spacious bar and restaurant featuring reclaimed wood, an open kitchen and Carrera marble–topped bars. Original cocktails, such as the Glyda Rose (gin, campari, blood orange and champagne) and the Chase and Shade (apple brandy, apple-cider molasses, black tea, lemon, and bitters), have been designed to showcase clean flavors. A lengthy beer selection includes eight regional draughts (Peak Organic, Dogfish Head) along with an international list by the bottle. Creative small plates, meanwhile, range from homemade beef jerky to razor clams. 570 Vanderbilt Ave at Bergen St, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn (718-623-0570)

Brinkley’s Brothers Tom and Anthony Martignetti have converted their former Bar Martignetti into this 92-seat locavore gastropub, designed to evoke the Victorian and industrial periods with repurposed factory carts that double as tables. They will source ingredients from as close to the city as possible, and put them to use in British-inflected dishes like monkfish fritters with mushy peas and tartar sauce, and pork-and-stilton bangers with mashed potatoes and onion gravy. Beers, too, will be exclusively from New York State. 406 Broome St at Cleveland Pl (212-680-5600) Read more »

The Feed openings: Todd English’s Juliet to open next Friday

Posted in Eat Out by Eat Out on October 15th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
    This is not Todd English

    This is not Todd English

The Feed just got word from PR reps that the Todd English’s club/restaurant Juliet at 39 West 21st Street is set to open a week from Friday on October 23. According to Guest of a Guest, the Chelsea space is designed with “graffiti script, lattice-detailed ceiling and mirror mosaic.” It’s been a busy week for chef English; let’s just hope those stitches are out in time for the big opening event.

The Feed openings: tbsp launches rickshaw cart

Walk off that banana bread on the Highline

Walk off that banana bread on the High Line.

That walk on the High Line is pleasant…but wouldn’t it be even better with treats to fuel your every step? To help, tbsp has launched a bright-blue rickshaw cart, serving a small menu of savory and sweet treats on weekdays from noon to 5:30pm until November 13th. Sandwiches include options like the grilled steak with caramelized onions and blue cheese dressing, and one with sharp cheddar, tomato and watercress, while sweets range from homemade banana bread to brownies and cookies. And don’t be scared away by the dropping temperature: A warm cup of Stumptown coffee will help keep you nice and toasty.
