This week, we whetted your palates with our roundup of the eight best new cookbooks to gift for the holidays. The Feed is feeling generous, and guesses that you, dear reader, have been nice, not naughty. In honor of your shrinking budgets and the upcoming season of giving, we’ve snagged copies of every book mentioned in the story (nearly two dozen) to raffle off to you, including three signed copies of Thomas Keller’s Ad Hoc at Home. We know you’re anxiously awaiting our Momo Midtown coverage (we have a scout en route right now), but here’s a little newsy morsel to tide you over. Michael Psilakis, who built his rep turning out highbrow Greek food (and, um, nachos), has partnered with Ketel One to do a late-night food concession in the Meatpacking District.
The menu, which will be available December 3 through 5 from midnight to 2am, will feature items like a lamb burger with roasted-red-pepper-and-feta sauce, and a chicken shish kebab with fennel and onion salad. It’s all free, along with gratis rides home during the two-hour window. The outfit will then head out to Chicago, where it will be greeted by Rick Bayless (he’ll do the menu in the Windy City) followed by Ilan Hall in L.A.

It’s a rough week for four-legged fleecy types, but don’t let that stop you from flocking to this book party and cooking demo for Michael Psilakis’s How to Roast a Lamb. Feast on five dishes from the book, all paired with Greek wines from the Anthos cellar. Fans can get face time at a Q&A session and book signing (a copy is included with cost of entry) after the dinner. Astor Center, 399 Lafayette St at 4th St (212-674-7501, astorcenter.com). 6:30–8:30pm, $85.
Chef Michael Psilakis has a treat for your little ones this Halloween: All children under 12 can eat for free from Kefi’s kids’ menu all day long! That includes meatballs in tomato sauce, and a mini-Kefi burger with fries (both normally $6.95), among other things. Perhaps he’s banking on the kids being too sick from free candy to want to take advantage of the offer…
This just in: Everyone’s favorite Beauty and the Beast twosome, Michael Psilakis and Donatella Arpaia, have gone busto at midtown Mediterranean eatery Mia Dona. The pair’s rep just dropped word that Psilakis is leaving his role as executive chef and partner at the restaurant effective immediately.
This is the second break between the front-of-house doyenne and a chef-partner. The first, with David Burke last year, meant changes for UES stalwart davidburke & donatella (it recently reopened as David Burke Townhouse). Read more »
The following bars and restaurants are expected to open by July 8. Always call ahead, as opening dates can vary.
Gus & Gabriel Out of homage to his late father, Gus, and his son, Gabriel, chef Michael Psilakis (Anthos, Mia Dona) presents his sophisticated spin on childhood classics. He’s recast the original Kefi space as a traditional American pub, with antique mirrors, a tin ceiling and dark-wood tables. The casual fare includes hot dogs made in-house and a pulled-pork sloppy joe; other familiar foods, from chili to a BLT, also get a stylish touch. As for drinks, the focus on craft beers and brown spirits is decidedly grown-up. 222 W 79th St between Amsterdam Ave and Broadway (212-362-7470)
That tan will only amplify beneath the Miami sun, Miss Arpaia!
Seems our speculation has come to fruition. Camp Psilakis checked in this morning to let us know that the Greek toque, along with his front-of-house sister-in-arms, Donatella Arpaia, has signed on to handle culinary concepts at the Viceroy Miami. Read more »

Could Michael Psilakis be engaging in a little restaurant redirection? While all eyes are focused on the goings-on at the latest Psilakis-Arpaia love child, Gus & Gabriel’s, we hear the Greek toque has some additional projects up his sleeve (two stage-magic references in one lede…high five). According to this article in Hispanic Business, the Viceroy Miami has brought the chef on board to helm the hotel’s dining program. The Viceroy’s governing outfit—Kor Hotel Group—also recently announced its plans to bring a Viceroy to Hudson Square in 2010. Let’s play connect the dots, shall we? Read more »

The beefy duel on Miami’s white, sandy beaches is over and Spike Mendelsohn, the funky-hat–wearing contestant on Top Chef season four and proprietor of D.C.’s Good Stuff Eatery, lives up to his burger-flipping promise. His Colletti’s Smokehouse burger—an ensemble of a beef patty topped with applewood-smoked bacon, Vermont cheddar cheese, chipotle barbecue sauce and tempura-fried Vidalia onions—handily bested 21 other chefs’ patties in a contest of meat, smoke and greasy fingers. The event, hosted by Food Network royal highness Rachael Ray, attracted 1,800 carnivorous guests who scarfed down every manner of burger, from chef Michael Psilakis’s lamb version, to the meat and mushroom Half Stack from Shake Shack, to a vegan entry from Napa. The teeming hordes were punctuated by an impressive roster of culinary celebs, including Marcus Samuelsson, Tom Colicchio, Anne Burrell, Alex Guarnaschelli and Guy Fieri, who couldn’t resist America’s favorite primordial comfort food. But even Iron Chefs like Bobby Flay and Masaharu Morimoto were unable to catch Spike, who looked downright beatific upon winning.—Michael Anstendig
