    La Fonda del Sol, 1961.

Magazines, newspapers and especially blogs are obsessed with the new. But what happens when old becomes new again? We did our best to explore the question as it relates to spots like Minetta Tavern and Monkey Bar, as well as reboots such as La Fonda del Sol in this week’s Eat Out feature. Also, look for factoids on the venues’ storied pasts (the first issue of Reader’s Digest was published in the Minetta Tavern basement), plus a regular from the original La Fonda del Sol weighs in on the new version. Jay Cheshes prefers the main dining room to the bar at La Fonda del Sol, but finds that “menu inconsistencies are, sadly, echoed in both rooms,” and gives it three out of six stars. [TONY]

TONY gives four out of six stars to East Village yakitori cocktail club Mr. Jones, which “is far more Japanese tapas than meat-on-a-stick.” [TONY]

“You’ll leave Beer Table convinced that your pennies were well spent,” we say in our latest bar review, bestowing the “brew enthusiast’s dream” with five out of six stars. [TONY]

The throngs that descend with regularity on Baoguette and the new Manhattan Defonte’s may enjoy TONY’s picks of the best new pleasures on sliced bread (and arepas—Williamsburg’s Caracas sneaked in there too). Tasty morsels are good for you, too, at Rouge Tomate.

Hello, readers. Yes, yes, we’re excited about the upcoming inauguration, too. In this week’s issue (January 15–21), find out where to booze your hearts out the night Mr. Obama drops the elect from his current title. But don’t get too smug over what looks like a step toward equality in this country. This week’s feature focuses on lady chefs still getting short shrift in New York restaurants—this time, at the hands of the media. Read more »
