The march to Fort Defiance this Saturday

The always-charming Mr. St. John Frizell—he of Red Hook’s newly opened colonial café and bar, Fort Defiance—may have found his own equivalent to the infamous repeal day party at Employees Only. Read more »

Tales of the Cocktail: The Hendrick’s burlesque bash

Posted in Eat Out by Jordana Rothman on July 9th, 2009 at 6:11 pm

If the duties of a brand ambassador seem a bit vague, consider the task appointed to Hendrick’s Gin delegate Charlotte Voisey. At last night’s Hendrick’s burlesque party, held at the New Orleans Roosevelt Hotel (N.B. This is the birthplace of the Sazerac cocktail), we found her dressed in a winged fairy-princess costume, which she wore for the duration of the event. TONY would never do that to us. Oh wait. The Doublewood was poured first, with citrus and chocolate notes from 12 years in bourbon barrels, and a whiff of baking spices from nine months in oloroso sherry casks. Read more »

Booze beat: The repeal of Prohibition at Employees Only

Posted in Eat Out by Eat Out on December 8th, 2008 at 2:43 pm

For cocktail enthusiasts, drink historians and dedicated boozers, last Friday at 5:32pm marked a historic anniversary more festive than July 4, more jubilatory than New Year’s Eve. It was the exact moment that Prohibition was repealed 75 years ago. Gothamites eagerly celebrated the anniversary of tippling freedom with hooch-soaked events across town. Read more »
