Yesterday, an anonymous tipster brought the Feed news of iced espresso-based drinks at Cafe Pedlar. Today the tipster checks in with an update:
“More developments this morning: iced coffee! ‘First one ever,’ she said, handing it to me. Cool, glorious, heavenly deliciousness. Cold-brewed. Doesn’t even require sugar or milk. $2.50.”
You heard it here: It’s officially iced-coffee weather, regarless of what this website says.
This in from a super-caffeinated enthused Cafe Pedlar regular/Feed tipster:
“Cafe Pedlar continues to improve. Act is definitely getting together. Now they have iced drinks. Iced latte/iced Americano. Delicious. I think one of the Franks served me himself this morning. ‘Serviced’ me? Whatever—you know what I mean.”

Ah, we’re so predictable. Times get tough, and we turn to bread—stuffed with all kinds of deliciousness. We suppose it could be worse.… In this week’s issue, the cover story focuses on spring fashion and we ponder another trend of the moment: sandwiches. The throngs that descend with regularity on Baoguette and the new Manhattan Defonte’s may enjoy TONY’s picks of the best new pleasures on sliced bread (and arepas—Williamsburg’s Caracas sneaked in there too). Consider the following new restaurants when you dine out next week (openings can be delayed, so call ahead to confirm before heading out):
An Choi In an attempt to bring more authentic Vietnamese food to New York, owners Tuan and Huy Bui have opened this small space designed to look like a street alley in Saigon. It comes complete with a mobile food cart dispensing banh mi sandwiches, including fillings such as crispy roasted pork with pickled carrots, daikon radish, cilantro and aioli. The restaurant also specializes in pho: chicken or beef broths with rice noodles, bean sprouts, Thai basil and lime. 85 Orchard St between Broome and Grand Sts (212-226-3700)
BXL East A second location of the midtown Belgian beer bar and restaurant has opened on the Upper East Side, this time offering a bigger selection of suds, including 15 on tap and 50 by the bottle. Pair its house brew, the Cuvee BXL (an amber ale made by upstate’s Brewery Ommegang), with steak or one of many preparations of moules frites. 210 E 51st St between Second and Third Aves (212-888-7782) Read more »
The Franks of Frankies 457 Spuntino fame have so many real and rumored projects in the air that it’s getting pretty hard to keep the facts straight. According to owner Frank Castronovo, despite reports of their new Court Street café’s soft opening, the name has yet to be printed correctly. Here it is, from the horse’s mouth: Cafe Pedlar (and if you really want to say it right, you should pronounce it in the good ol’ Carroll Gardens way as “Cafe Pedlah”). The name was inspired by the late Vincent “Jimmy the Peddler” Cincotta, one of the city’s last horse-and-cart vendors and father of local produce man Carmine, who owns the property. The project is part of a partnership with Duane Sorenson, the man behind Stumptown Coffee Roasters (we hear he’s the one pulling the shots now), and an impromptu offshoot of the yet-to-open Stumptown roastery and Frankies café in Red Hook, called Delightful Coffee Shop.
