Beer and Pickle Pairing
Justin Philips (Beer Table) and Bob McClure (McClure’s pickles) will show how well brine goes with brew at this tasting event. Beer Table, 427B Seventh Ave between 14th and 15th Sts, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-965-1196). 7–8:30pm, $35.
NYC Bartenders Ball
This divey bash mixes two things we love: booze and charity. The price of a ticket goes to housing for needy families—you get access to an open bar and a buffet. Since every ball has its belles (and beaus), you can nominate barkeeps online before you go (categories include “who shows the most skin”). P.D. O’Hurley’s, 557 Twelfth Ave at 44th St (212-873-1900, murphguide.com). 7pm, $50–$100.

Guest blogger Liz Thorpe of Murray’s Cheese, author of the forthcoming book The Cheese Chronicles and all around fine-foods guru gives you, dear readers, a guide to the best of tomorrow’s Good Beer drinkfest, sponsored by Edible Brooklyn at BAM:
A mayor-sanctioned gathering with quality beers and the noshes that complement them is more than enough reason to hit BAM Wednesday. But as is the case with many tasting events, with so may choices, filler and long lines, it pays to be selective. Below, a list of vendors to be sure to hit, and why. Read more »
There are two tastings to choose from tonight, but only one benefits the Steven Scher Memorial Scholarship as well as your taste buds.

Rocco DiSpirito
Chefs for Scher
Sixteen chefs will gather at this charity taste-around to honor Steven Scher, the late restaurateur behind Calle Ocho and Bar Bao. Look out for snacks like Corton’s almond-and-mozzarella gazpacho and meatballs from C-lister Rocco DiSpirito (available at the VIP preparty only). Proceeds benefit the Steven Scher Memorial Scholarship, which funds aspiring restaurateurs. The Bowery Hotel, 335 Bowery at 3rd St (800-838-3006, chefsforscher.com). 7:30–10:30pm, $150–$225.
Chocolate and Beer Tasting
Update: This event is now sold out. Beer and chocolate are the focus of this intimate tasting, which will pair five rare brews (including Sinebrychoff Porter and Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast) with five chocolates from Brooklyn’s own artisanal outfit Mast Brothers. The Mast duo will be on hand to chat about their goods. Reservations are a must. Beer Table, 427B Seventh Ave between 14th and 15th Sts, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-965-1196). 7–8:30pm; $35.

The BFT at Anthos (Photo: Roxana Marroquin)
Kiss your peanuts and pretzels goodbye. We’ve selected the best new pub fare, and it’s good for far more than soaking up booze (did we mention that none costs more than $12?). Click here for more on the BFT (pork belly, feta and fresh tomato on thick griddle-cooked bread) at Anthos Upstairs, the It’s-It Ice Cream sandwiches (vanilla ice cream between two oatmeal cookies, all coated in chocolate) at Pacific Standard, and way more. We’ve paired every eat with a suitable drink and a mouthwatering photo—what are you waiting for already?

Pizza and beer is a time-honored combo, but loftier palates can upgrade to haute Italian and artisan brews at this five-course beer dinner. The menu—from chef Michael White of Convivio and Marea—features items like marinated sardines paired with unique beers by Italian brewmasters Leonardo di Vincenzo and Teo Musso. The duo will present each pairing and field questions.
Convivio, 45 Tudor City Pl at 42nd St (212-599-5045). 7:30pm, $110.

Askinosie chocolate at Blue Ribbon
The Glick boards the F train this week to Park Slope, where three 100 best items await his ironfisted scrutiny. First up, the 13th Century Grut Bier at Beer Table, which he deems a “smooth and savory beverage.” On to Blue Apron Foods where he unleashes himself upon an Askinosie chocolate bar (“certainly worth [spending $7.50] for the chocolate fanatic in your life”), and a “smoky and spicy” Palacio mild chorizo, which he puts in the microwave and thus has trouble cutting. Glick, the microwave?

The chicken skewers at Mr. Jones
Jay Cheshes prefers the main dining room to the bar at La Fonda del Sol, but finds that “menu inconsistencies are, sadly, echoed in both rooms,” and gives it three out of six stars. [TONY]
TONY gives four out of six stars to East Village yakitori cocktail club Mr. Jones, which “is far more Japanese tapas than meat-on-a-stick.” [TONY]
“You’ll leave Beer Table convinced that your pennies were well spent,” we say in our latest bar review, bestowing the “brew enthusiast’s dream” with five out of six stars. [TONY]

The catfish sandwich at Baoguette. (Photo by Roxana Marroquin)
Ah, we’re so predictable. Times get tough, and we turn to bread—stuffed with all kinds of deliciousness. We suppose it could be worse.… In this week’s issue, the cover story focuses on spring fashion and we ponder another trend of the moment: sandwiches. The throngs that descend with regularity on Baoguette and the new Manhattan Defonte’s may enjoy TONY’s picks of the best new pleasures on sliced bread (and arepas—Williamsburg’s Caracas sneaked in there too). Today in Time Out New York

Just like this city, New Amsterdam Market is being built on oyster shells.
Last Saturday, The Feed attended the first benefit of the New Amsterdam Market, an organization that is working to re-create an old-style indoor public market in New York City. Titled “Founded on Oyster Shells,” the fund-raiser offered samples of some of the best local artisanal products currently being produced (East Coast oysters on the half shell, pickled foods from Beer Table and Marlow & Sons, a selection of domestic draft beers from Beer Table, bread baked with spent grain and cheese from Saxelby Cheesemongers, among other delicacies). They also held a silent auction, which included prizes like the opportunity to help birth a lamb, and a meal with Alice Waters.
Today we hear from director Robert LaValva about the outcome of the event: Read more »
