Travertine “may look like a nocturnal hot spot, but at prime dinner hour it’s (thankfully) a restaurant first,” writes Jay Cheshes in his three-star review. [TONY]

Chef King Phojanakong receives four stars for his Pan-Asian small plates in Bed-Stuy: “Umi Nom’s memorable food makes it a gem in an unlikely ’hood.” [TONY]

The critics: SD26, Mari Vanna and more

San Domenico’s Tony May has passed the family torch to his daughter Marisa at the new SD26, writes Jay Cheshes, who awards the restaurant four stars. It’s “enormous, modern and frenetic—the opposite of its stuffy forerunner.” [TONY]

Three-star Russian chain Mari Vanna “trades in both pre- and post-Soviet kitsch,” but “you pay for the spectacle as much as for the food.” [TONY]

According to Jay Cheshes, A Voce Columbus “charms without ever trying too hard,” and garners four out of five stars. [TONY]

The Upper West Side’s farm-forward Recipe gets four stars for being a neighborhood restaurant that serves “reasonably priced, homespun dishes that are executed with sophistication.” [TONY] Read more »

Jay Cheshes casts his line into the relocated Oceana and only comes up with three stars, writing, “The kitchen fares best when it sticks to the basics.” [TONY]

At the two-star Pan-Latin Agua Dulce, the generic food “is as inauthentic as it is spread geographically thin.” [TONY] Read more »

The Feed openings: A Voce Columbus, Gansevoort 69 and more

The following restaurants and bars are expected to open by September 9. Opening dates can change, though, so always call ahead to confirm before heading out.

A Voce Columbus A Voce’s Italian fine dining is the latest top-tier restaurant to hit the Time Warner Center. Executive chef Missy Robbins is introducing a largely original pan-regional menu to the Columbus Circle outpost, along with new features, such as an antipasti bar (look for baccalà and pancetta with figs, pistachios and a balsamic reduction). The former Café Gray space received a plush face-lift from the Rockwell Group, including a glass wall displaying the 9,000-large wine collection and views of Central Park. 10 Columbus Circle at Broadway, third floor (212-823-2523)

Gansevoort 69 Nightlife impresarios David Graziano and Corey Lane (both of Pink Elephant) are putting their stamp on the former Florent space, keeping what suits them (the diner facade, original terrazzo floors) and “cleaning up” the parts that don’t (expect a neutral palette and fresh wooden beams). The late-night destination will serve comfort food, such as BLTs made with Berkshire bacon, and all-day breakfast dishes like chicken and waffles. The bar that brews coffee in the a.m. will pour cocktails at night. Starting next spring, expect a roof deck and sidewalk seating. 69 Gansevoort St between Greenwich and Washington Sts (212-691-0069) Read more »

The Feed’s been slowly passing along tidbits on the latest restaurant to hit the Time Warner monolith, A Voce Columbus. First came our fall preview story, next the opening date, the resy line and more hard stats. (Though the official soft opening is September 9, you can reserve a table now.) But now we have what is quite possibly the most important info of all: what’s being served. Executive chef Missy Robbins has devised an almost entirely new menu for her shopping mall debut. See the salumi, dinner and dessert exclusives after the jump. Read more »

A Voce Columbus: Resy line, opening day and more

Posted in Eat Out by Gabriella Gershenson on August 19th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
The new A Voce, rendered, with happy diners, rendered.

The new A Voce, rendered, with happy diners, also rendered.

For eaters chomping at the bit to experience a little bit of Italian nirvana in the Time Warner Center, this series of exclusive tidbits is for you. A Voce Columbus, with executive chef Missy Robbins at the helm, will begin taking reservations Monday, August 24 at 11am. For your speed dial, the number is 212-823-2523.

But when will you actually get to dine there, you ask? Here is the official order of operations, per peeps behind the scene:

September 9–13: Soft opening (what this means: It’s open to the public, but don’t expect any specials)
    September 18: Official opening day
September 21: Lunch is now served
September 26: A Voce’s first ever brunch service debuts

That’s all for now, folks. Stay tuned for more details in next week’s Fall Preview issue…
