Snow on the ground Sunday night proved no deterrent to the cookie-hungry masses: More than 250 people paid $10 apiece to try 28 cookies at the sold-out second-annual Cookie Takedown. In the back room of Gowanus’s Bell House, sugar fiends lined up to sample everything from bourbon-laced mini whoopie pies to chocolate chip cookies filed with bacon and nuts, to classic gingersnaps and other recipes straight from Grandma’s playbook. Both the audience and the judges—Renato Poliafito of Red Hook’s Baked and TONY’s own Eat Out editor Gabriella Gershenson—selected their favorites; winners, including the “Oreo Cookie Cookies” (a standard sugar cookie recipe with smashed Oreos in the batter), “Nacho Mama’s Cookies” (butter cookies sandwiched around orange-colored buttercream frosting) and one baked treat that incorporated at least six different kinds of chocolate, took home prizes.
