Red Bamboo Vegetarian Soul Lounge to close, reopen as Poppa’s Place

There will be meat (but probably not lion) on the menu.

Vegetarians—who often lament that there aren’t more restaurants geared toward their meat-free diets—may be sad to learn that Fort Greene’s Red Bamboo Vegetarian Soul Lounge—TONY’s 2007 Reader’s Choice winner for best vegetarian restaurant—will close at the end of the month. Owner Jason Wong plans to reopen it as the neo-American Poppa’s Place in January (the name comes from a restaurant that occupied the space in the ’70s). He writes, “It’s been our customers who have made Red Bamboo Brooklyn a huge success since we opened in April 2006, and we thank them deeply for their support…Unfortunately, the times have been tough for everyone lately and we’ll be closing December 31st. (There’ll be a New Year’s Eve/Goodbye Red Bamboo party coming—more on that soon.)”

For fans of the restaurant, the good news is that chef Billy Ahearn and his more popular meatless dishes will remain at the new place.

SO SAD to see you guys go! Only been to you guys once… and LOVED IT! Been to the one in the w. village more often… I’m happy to read that the chef will keep some of the veg dishes on the menu :) We need MORE veg places in nyc/long island… NOT LESS! You will be missed!

This was the only vegetarian restaurant in Ft. Greene. Once its name changes I won’t be going back, regardless of whether or not they retain “customer favorites.” That place is always packed so I don’t buy the “times are tough” thing.

Wow - this has been my absolute favorite lunch place, since I am a vegetarian and work right down the street at Pratt. That will be one less place to get a great veggie-friendly lunch at an affordable price with such a great atmosphere. The staff there at lunchtime has always been fantastic - I hope they all retain their jobs with the new place…

It sucks, that was one of my favorite places to eat or even grab a few drinks.

Same here - so many memories at this restaurant with my husband. This used to be our default place. Now where will we go to find an array of vegan eats in the neighborhood? I guess we’ll have to find somewhere new. So upset and disappointed. Another one bites the dust.
