NY Craft Beer Week is upon us: From today through September 20, beer lovers can visit 80 bars across all five boroughs to celebrate artisanal brews that put the megabrands to shame. Last night at a kickoff party for the event, we got our first taste of NY3, a hearty quaff created by three brewers (Captain Lawrence, Ithaca Beer and Southampton Brewery), using ingredients from Westchester, Long Island and the Finger Lakes. Those participating in NYCBW should make a point of tasting it.
Other highlights include the Gotham Cask Festival, featuring a whopping 60 unfiltered, unpasteurized brews dispensed at bars like Rattle N Hum and Swift. Astor Center will host seminars on malt, hops and yeast. There will be pub crawls and beer walks, as well a hopped-up bike ride through Williamsburg and Bushwick. Even restaurants like Tabla, Mas (farmhouse), Resto and (gasp!) Per Se will offer beer-paired, four-course dinners.
Head to nycbeerweek.com for info on all the events. We’ll see you out and about this weekend.—Michael Anstendig
