The following bars and restaurants are slated to open by June 10. Opening dates vary; call ahead to confirm.
DBGB Kitchen and Bar For those with fat bank accounts, some of Daniel Boulud’s more casual restaurants (Café Boulud, DB Bistro Moderne) might qualify as affordable. But with the opening of this East Village bistro, the acclaimed French chef takes it all the way downtown at prices even the proletariat can handle. The space is designed to recall the Bowery’s restaurant-supply shops, with floor-to-ceiling shelves holding dry goods and tableware. Among the menu’s featured items, from executive chef Jim Leiken, are a dozen types of house-made sausage, each representing a different meat tradition (the Toulouse is stuffed with pork, duck and garlic and served over cassoulet beans). Burgers are another indulgent option—the Piggie’s beef patty comes topped with Daisy May’s pulled pork—as is the full raw bar. The international craft beer program, with 22 on tap and an additional 30 by the bottle, and the list of affordable table wines was curated by former Tasting Room chef Colin Alevras. 299 Bowery at E Houston St (212-933-5300)
SHO Shaun Hergatt Australian chef Shaun Hergatt’s last New York gig was as Gabriel Kreuther’s executive sous chef at the now-shuttered Atelier. Now he’s returned to helm this sprawling restaurant. His food blends modern French cooking with Asian touches, which can be seen in dishes like glazed beef cheek with Thai pepper. The decor reflects a similar sensibility, featuring a sleek design accented with Tibetan art and mother-of-pearl inlay. An international 550-bottle wine list has a special focus on boutique and biodynamic vineyards. The Setai, New York; 40 Broad St at Exchange Pl, second floor (212-809-3993)
Palace Gate Gilt restaurant unveils this 75-seat outdoor lounge, set in the scenic courtyard of the historic Villiard Mansion, which also happens to be a featured location on Gossip Girl. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a fashionista teenager to enjoy the space, where original cocktails like the Mariposa (mezcal, fresh lime, candied violets) and classics, such as the Pimm’s Cup, can be enjoyed alongside casual dishes from executive chef Justin Bogle, including suckling-pig tacos. Wine director Patrick Cappiello offers a list of 20 half bottles that will be available only outside, in addition to the restaurant’s wider selection. The New York Palace Hotel, 455 Madison Ave at 51st St (212-891-8100)
Beauty Bar The East Village’s retro Beauty Bar has spawned five locations throughout the U.S. since it opened fourteen years ago, and now Brooklyn can boast a branch as well. Beers from Sixpoint and Brooklyn Brewery are on tap, the vintage hair dryers are in place, and the $10 martini-and-manicure deal is available Wednesday through Saturday after 6pm. New to this location: throwback finger foods like pigs in a blanket. 921 Broadway at Melrose St, Bushwick, Brooklyn (347-529-0370)
