Cheap eats: Eight bars with free food

Posted in Eat Out by Eat Out on June 4th, 2009 at 2:41 pm

eaticoncheapeatsIt’s Thursday. We could all use a drink to make it to Friday. Buy a tipple and get a full belly for free when you hit up these spots.

    Trophy Bar
Hit the backyard of this well-loved boozer on Thursday eves for a sizzling BBQ dinner of grilled chicken wings, pineapple and corn. Your entry ticket to the spread comes with a purchase of a frosty bev—palate-cleansing drafts are discounted two dollars 5–8pm daily. 351 Broadway between Keap and Rodney Sts, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (trophybar.com). Keep reading for seven more deals from places like Tailor and Centro Vinoteca.

    Centro Vinoteca
An $8 happy-hour cocktail at this Italian hang (try the cucumber-gin martini) gets you a trio of bites, including a truffled deviled egg and a mini BLT (daily, 5–7pm). 74 Seventh Ave South at Barrow St (212-367-7470, centrovinoteca.com)

    Lusso
When you’re all wings-and-popcorned out, slip into Lusso weekdays between 5 and 7pm and partake of Italian snacks such as mozzarella-anchovy skewers and herb-cheese focaccia. 331 West Broadway at Grand St (212-431-0131, lussonyc.com)

    Rodeo Bar
Go honky-tonk for cheesy nachos and wings, gratis during happy hour (Mon–Sat 4–8pm; Sun 6–9pm) with the purchase of a drink. 375 Third Ave at 27th St (212-683-6500, rodeobar.com)

    Harbour
This sustainable-seafood eatery offers elevated bar snacks like duck-fat popcorn, Chinese five-spice nuts and habit-forming fried chickpeas in exchange for the price of your drink daily. 290 Hudson St between Dominick and Spring Sts (212-989-6410 harbournyc.com)

    Shelley’s New York
Buy one stiff, cheap drink at this timeworn neighborhood tavern any day of the week and gain access to a perplexingly generous 5pm spread (last week there was sausage-packed pasta). 58-15 Woodside Ave at 58th St, Woodside, Queens (718-672-2571)

    Port 41
Daily at Hell’s Kitchen dive Port 41, dirt-cheap beer comes with comped hot dogs and salty popcorn served by bikini-clad bartenders. High-end eats they’re not, but that’s not why you came, is it? 355 W 41st St between Eighth and Ninth Aves (212-947-1188)

    Tailor
Eben Freeman’s eclectic cocktails—like the bubble-gum-flavored Bazooka—may not be cheap ($11–$13), but zippy curried popcorn helps to justify the splurge. 525 Broome St between Thompson St and Sixth Ave (212-334-5182, tailornyc.com)

How could you forget Rudy’s on 43rd & 9th? A Hell’s Kitchen institution with super cheap beer and unlimited free hot dogs. So disgustingly delicious.
