Get out, get drunk: Our top ten open-air bars

Posted in Eat Out by Jordana Rothman on April 27th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
    the delancey roof bar

    The Delancey

It’s a fine day outside, people, and the best seats at your favorite alfresco boozing spots wait for no one. Click through for a list of ten outdoor and rooftop bars at which you could be wasting away your youth right now. Right. Now.

    1. Gowanus Yacht Club

The (rather small) big daddy of seasonal outdoor bars has finally opened.

    2. Franklin Park

Picnic tables and a dozen stellar drafts are the draw at this shaded Crown Heights beer garden.

    3. Quarter Bar

Quarter Bar’s key allure: You can bring your own meat to toss on the grill.

    4. The Campbell Terrace

Raspberry lemonade is a fittingly old-fashioned libation for an al fresco bar sporting mahogany rocking chairs.

    5. The Delancey

The roof goes off at this downtown party house sporting the finest view on the LES.

    6. Dumont

Forget the artfully scuffed interior—the seats to covet are in the leafy garden.

    7. Habana Outpost

The friendly, neighborhood vibe at this outdoor spot makes its seasonal run hotly anticipated by Fort Greene locals.

    8. Rocky Sullivan’s

Take in the Red Hook waterfront over a Sixpoint ale on Rocky’s spacious roof.

    9. 230 Fifth

Proximity to Murray Hill means a frat quotient at this rooftop bar—keep your eyes focused on the quieting midtown vista instead.

    10.  Hell Gate Social

Open-air movies screen on balmy Sunday nights at this sleek Astoria boite.

The Frying Pan didn’t make it? Does this mean you haven’t gotten drunk and wandered around the bowels of an old ship, dangerously close to hot engine parts? You haven’t even tried to fornicate in one of the many musty crew cabins? This list is fixed!

Only two bars in NYC (Manhattan) you are going to have to spin off another magazine and call it Time Out Brooklyn. Get a born and bred NYer to write some articles rather than Brooklyn living transplants.

As I see it you have a hard time counting…

“Born and Bred NYer”, huh - I guess Massapequa IS technically in New York State…

    4. Posted by Ralph on April 29th, 2009 at 2:46 pm

Preach on, “As I see it”. TONY has really turned into Time Out Brooklyn.

    5. Posted by Mark on April 30th, 2009 at 2:58 pm

I may get some flack for this, but how can you leave out the Bohemian Beer Hall. It is THE outdoor beer garden in the city. It’s opening basically signals the start of nice weather.

I have to concur with Mark on his point that the Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria is the summer place to be and well worth the brief trip from Manhattan. One can spend hours there without feeling a need to change venues. Harry’s Water Taxi in LIC also deserves an honorable mention as well.

As a true “born & bred NY’er” myself, I think you all forget that Brooklyn is part of New York City… But please, feel free not to come to Gowanus Yacht Club or Habana Outpost. Your loss, and my gain for less stuffy stuck up people ruining the awesome atmosphere…and both are right off train stops too.

Brooklyn IS part of NY, fools.

More people in BK than in Manhattan.

    9. Posted by Andrew on May 2nd, 2009 at 3:37 pm

For a really charming and intimate spot - Black Rabbit in Greenpoint has it.

    10. Posted by mike on May 8th, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Yes Brooklyn is New York but it would be nice to occasionally get a few more listings within Manhattan. Yes BK has cooler spots but at least give us a few ideas for Manhattan. It is really becomming Time Out Brooklyn. There are many spots in NYC worth mentioning

i agree stopped buying time-out as it seems to feature more of brooklyn

    12. Posted by Ludwig on May 21st, 2009 at 3:16 pm

What’s with all the Brooklyn hang-outs on this list? Can only concur with Ralph, Time Out Brooklyn is more like it.

    13. Posted by Tony Bilforth on June 14th, 2009 at 11:19 am

Agree - too much Brooklyn, as nice as it may be. The writers must just all live there…

    14. Posted by divinewine on July 7th, 2009 at 6:01 pm

I guess you manhattanites are too busy working longer hours to pay for your address to realize that there are more outdoor spaces in the outer boroughs, hence more (and better) outdoor drinking spots. This isn’t a comprehensive list, it’s a top ten.
