The Feed just got word that Jim Mamary’s Smith Street dive, Trout, will reopen on Friday. The poor man’s Gowanus Yacht Club flatlined in November, citing landlord issues that, according to our tipster, have been resolved. The menu and layout will remain largely the same; bringing a new bankroll to the outfit: Mamary’s Whiskey Sunday partner Richard Krause.

Since we are talking rumors, rumor has it that ownership has changed - or at least part of it. Apparently the face of the place, the two young guys, have been unknowingly cut out and from what I can tell, didn’t even know this was going on. Seems very fishy (no pun intended) to me. I can’t respect a place that would do that - so while I am happy to see Trout reopen, I can’t bring myself to go to a place that works so shadily. Especially in times like these - gotta pick and choose where I spend my money.

The most important thing is that there is no longer a dark, empty commercial space attracting loiterers all day and well into the night. Sometimes its a very good thing to have ownership change hands. Obviously things closed down for a reason. It would be interesting to hear more details on just went on behind the scenes.

From what I’ve experienced, it’s a summer spot…does well in the summer, not nearly as well in the winter. Rent in the BK is pretty high I am sure and if people aren’t dining, especially given the recession, I imagine rent couldn’t be met. I think we all liked that place, so “ownership changing” wasn’t an issue. I know it’s a dog eat dog world, but if that rumor is true I have no respect for the backstabbing.

Thank you shannon for speaking so kind. Jim Mamary is a snake and does not care about anyone in this neighborhood. He only cares about making money off of people, and it does not matter to him who he hurts along the way. The ownership did not change hands, it was stolen.
