Yesterday, The Feed caught überchef Grant Achatz on the tail end of Oprah. Ms. Winfrey explored tales of medical misdiagnosis, which included one woman who found out she didn’t have breast cancer after already having had a mastectomy. In the segment, the Alinea chef described his battle with tongue cancer and spoke with Oprah and medical expert Dr. Mehmet Oz about the importance of being an informed patient and getting a second—or as in Achatz’s case, fifth—opinion. While none of this was humorous in any way, we do have to point out that Oprah may have been misdiagnosed with having proper command of the English language, as she strained her facial muscles to say “Ack-its” and note that he’s been called “the Beethoven of the cool-inary woorl[d].” Achatz was focused as always, and his story is an amazing triumph against the odds. Still, we loved this tidbit about Alinea: “We’ve had guests cry with either…enjoyment or just, overwhelming emotion at the table”—though we have to say, we’ve seen people cry at Applebee’s (most likely for different reasons).—Zachary Feldman
