    Bacon Takedown: Smokin’

Posted in Eat Out by Eat Out on March 30th, 2009 at 9:42 am

Sunday’s Bacon Takedown at Williamsburg’s Radegast Hall & Biergarten showed no signs that the bacon craze has let up. Thirty amateur contestants vied for the grand prize ($100 + porcine glory) while more than 300 pork lovers lived their cardiologists’ worst collective nightmare come true. Creator Matthew Timms’s other recent takedowns—fondue and chili—generated lots of foodie and hipster buzz, but bacon’s got, well, back.
The event sold out within minutes and Timms had to turn away dozens of disappointed people lined up around the block. Outstanding entries included bacon-avocado ice cream, bacon blintzes, spicy bacon chocolate truffles, and maple pecan and bacon mini cupcakes. Jon Proville took home the grand prize for his cured “Electric Bacon”—a simple riff on a classic dusted with obscure Szechuan button spice mix. For those that didn’t make it in, The Feed stopped by and snapped some pics (and samples). Click through for the people’s choice winners and more.—Lara Rabinovitch

What a nutty event. Loads of fun, though! Great pics, and thanks for calling my dish ingenious.
Here’s my post about my experience at the Takedown.

I can think of at least a dozen ways in which Sunday’s Brooklyn Bacon Takedown at Williamsburg’s Radegast Hall & Beer Garden could have been handled better, but I don’t know a single way that it could have been made worse. Instead of having those of us who paid to taste line up and go along the table where the participants were serving, a crowd rushed the tables and refused to move. After 40 minutes of not moving more than three feet, many of us gave up in disgust and walked out… without a single bite! Inside, we were told that the event was sold out. When we went outside, people were on line, still waiting to buy tickets.

This was the most ridiculously handled event I’ve seen in years! The people who run the place should be ashamed.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
