Consider the following new restaurants and bars when heading out on the town next week:
Fatty Crab A sister location of Zak Pelaccio’s downtown Malaysian joint will open on the UWS next week. This larger 74-seat space will feature a cocktail lounge pouring Far East–inspired tipples designed by consultant Allen Katz, while the kitchen serves all of the dishes from the original location (chili-spiked Dungeness crab, “fatty duck”), and some new ones, including “fatty sliders” (mini pork-and-beef burgers). 2170 Broadway at 77th St (212-496-2722)
Dallas Jones This discreet joint has been in the ’cue game for some time now. The original location—a tiny bistro-esque setting in the Village—has been quietly smoking dry-rubbed beef and pork ribs since 1984. In the interim years, New York’s barbecue scene has exploded, and now owner Sam Bahri is engaging in a little expansion of her own, with a larger (but still small, at 19 seats) Brooklyn Heights location that will open by the second week of March. 87 Atlantic Ave between Henry and Hicks Sts, Brooklyn Heights (718-855-5511)
Favela Cubana The sounds and flavors of Brazil and Cuba unite at this recent Greenwich Village addition. Diners can perch on repurposed conga drums at the bar, and sip from an extensive menu of caipirinhas and mojitos—one version swaps orange and basil for the traditional lime and mint combination. Dig into binational dishes while listening to live music: A small stage in the back hosts musicians playing styles such as forró and pagode. 543 La Guardia Pl between Bleecker and W 3rd Sts (212-777-6500)
The Local 269 In the space that once housed lesbian sanctum Meow Mix (and later Vasmay Lounge) comes this Irish-tinged bar and music venue. The live bands appearing two nights a week are curated by co-owner Bill Snodgrass, who doubles as a guitarist in indie emo-rock band Ouijipig. Eight taps dominate the bar, but management promises they’ve got a handle on cocktails, too—they serve them “good, strong and large.” A two-for-one happy hour lasts from 2 to 9pm, and grilled cheese will be doled out on the house in March. 269 E Houston St at Suffolk St (212-228-9874)
